A la fin du Moyen Age, un type de monument nouveau vient prendre place dans l'eglise : a l'interieur d'un riche edicule architectural une veritable mise en scene montre le Christ mort etendu sur son tombeau et les saintes Femmes venues embaumer son corps. C'est ce qu'on appelle le saint sepulcre, dont la forme generale semble se constituer au cours du deuxieme quart du XIVe siecle, mais sa diffusion geographique est limitee au bassin superieur du Rhin - surtout en Alsace - et a la Souabe. On ne peut comprendre l'importance de ces saints sepulcres monumentaux que si on les replace dans le contexte de la devotion eucharistique et du culte lie a la Passion, meme a la liturgie du temps de Paques. L'auteur du present ouvrage a procede a une etude rigoureuse des oeuvres conservees, parvenant grace a sa sagacite a reconstituer celles qui sont aujourd'hui ruinees, en particulier la plus importante creation des annees 1340, le saint sepulcre de la cathedrale de Strasbourg qui est peut-etre le prototype de tous les autres.
