Erste Ausgabe der ersten vollständigen Übertragung von Goethes Faust ins Englische, übersetzt von Abraham Hayward (1801-1884). Goethes "Faust. Eine Tragödie" (= Faust I) erschien im Druck zuerst 1808. - Hayward war von 1828 bis 1844 Herausgeber des "Law Magazine" bzw. des "Quarterly Review of Jurisprudence". In dieser Eigenschaft trat er in Kontakt mit John Austin oder G. Cornewall Lewis, aber auch mit ausländischen Juristen, unter denen besonders Savigny zu erwähnen ist. Seine Schrift "Vom Beruf unserer Zeit" übersetzte Hayward ins Englische. Auf dem Titelblatt der Goethe-Ausgabe nimmt sich Hayward bescheiden zurück und wird nur indirekt als der Übersetzer von Savignys Schrift erwähnt. Von einer Auslandsreise, die ihn auch nach Deutschland führte, brachte Hayward seine Übersetzung von Goethes "Faust" mit nach England. Carlyle würdigte Haywards Übertragung als die mit Abstand beste seiner Zeit. Nach einer weiteren Reise nach Deutschland, während der er mit Tieck, Chamisso, De la Motte Fouque, Varnhagen von Ende und Madame Goethe zusammentraf, veröffentlichte Hayward im Jahre 1834 eine veränderte Fassung seiner Goethe-Übertragung. Die hochgelobte Übersetzung öffnete für Hayward weitere Türen, und er begann eine rege Zusammenarbeit mit verschiedenen englischsprachigen Periodika. - First Edition of the first complete translation of Faust into English, by Abraham Hayward.
