AGRICOLA, Rudolphus. Dialectica. Dorpius studiosis. Ut rectis studiis consulator studiosi, excusa sunt vobis haec Agricola dialectica. Louvain, Theodor [Dirk] Martens, 1515, 4 January.
Ad 1: Second edition of the most influential work of one of the earliest great humanists in Northern Europe, Rudolphus Agricola, Latin for Roelof Huisman (1444-1485), edited by his pupil Martinus Dorpius (1485-1525). Born at Baflo, near Groningen, Agricola started his studies at the celebrated St. Maartens School at Groningen. In 1456 Agricola matriculated at Erfurt, later at Cologne (1462), and at Louvain, and in 1468 he traveled to Italy, where he became a protege of the Prince d'Este in Ferrara, and a pupil of Theodor Gaza. Agricola returned to Germany in 1479, spending some time at Dillingen, where he completed his most important work, the De inventione dialectica, which was first printed in Cologne by H. Alopecius, some time before 1510. It is a very influential study of the proper place of logic in rhetorical studies, and it was of great significance for the education of the early humanists. It is a highly original, critical and systematic treatment of all ideas and concepts related to dialectica. Later he became professor at the University in Heidelberg. Erasmus admired Agricola, calling him the first to bring a breath of better literature from Italy, and eulogizing him in his Adagia I, iv 39. This second edition (the only one entitled Dialectica in stead of De inventione dialectica) is printed by the important printer Theodorus (Dirk) Martens at Louvain, who has printed many early humanistic works in 'the new (roman) letter', explicitly mentioned in the colophon of this work: "... imprimebat Louvanii Theodoricus Martinus Alustensis charactribus (ut est videre) faberrimis". Huisman lists no less than 82 editions prior to 1600 (incl. the epithome). Ad 2: First edition of one of the two first juridical works by Andreas Alciatus. In modern times better known as 'the inventor of emblems', Andrea Alciati (1492-1550) was the great humanistic interpreter of Roman law. From 1504 on he studied law in Milan. His excellent early training in classical philology made possible his restaurations and reinterpretations of the legal documents of antiquity. In 1511 he went to Bologna, where he heard the lectures of Ruini. By 1511 his first two juridical works were published in Strassburg, our copy being one of them.Ad 3-4: Very rare first and only editions of the two mathematical works by the Spanish mathematician and philosopher Gaspar Lax (1487-1560). After studying the arts and theology in Zaragoza, Lax taught in Paris in 1507 and 1508 at the College de Calvi, also known as 'the little Sorbonne'. He transferred to the College de Montaigu, where he continued to teach and study under the Scottish master John Maior. In 1517 he returned to the College de Calvi. He became so engrossed with the logical subtleties of the nominalist school that he was soon known as 'the Prince of the Parisian sophistae'. In 1524 he returned to Spain where he became professor at Zaragoza. Lax achieved a great fame as a mathematician. He published his two mathematical works (the Arithmetica speculativa and the Proportiones) at Paris in 1515. The first is described by Smith as 'a very prolix treatment of theoretical arithmetic, based on Boethius and his medieval successors'. The Proportiones is a more compact and formalistic treatment of ratios with citations of Euclid, Jordanus, and Campanus.Ad 5: First edition of the complete works of the Church Father Hilarius Pictaviensis (of Poictiers; d. 368), who was one of the most severe opponents to Arianism. The first work, his De trinitate is the first great contribution in Latin to the discussion of this important dogma. Book 1 treats of natural religion and how it leads up to relevation; book 2 especially discusses the baptismal formula; book 3 the union of the two natures in Christ; book 4 that this co-existence of two natures does not derogate from the unity of this divine Person; book 5 is against heretics (book 12 against Arianism in particular), etc. The book evidently produced a great impression. Contra Constantinum and Ad Constantinum: a petition to the emperor Constantine for toleration for the orthodox in Gaul, addressed to his fellow bishops of Gaul. Contra Auxentium and Auxentii Blasphemiae plena Ep.: treatises, written in 365, against the profession of orthodoxy made by Auxentius. It is a curious commentary upon early church history. De synodis is a explanation of the various professions of faith (318-9). In Ad apram filiam Hilarius draws a mystic portrait of the heavenly bridegroom, which is evidently intended to suggest the superiority of celibacy, but he leaves his daughter Apra an entirely free choice. Included is also his important commentary on the psalms. His commentary on Matthew is the most ancient exposition of the Gospels of Matthew by a Latin Father.Together these five important post-incunables are mirroring the dawn of early humanism in Europe North of the Alps: each work is a highlight in its own field: Neo-Latin philology (1), law studies (Roman law) (2), mathematics (3-4), and theology (5).
