All editions were printed by the Endter family, the first appeared in 1641.Also containing the maps, views and illustrated half-titles by Jacob van Sandrart and others, first used in the edition of 1686, but the illustrated half-titles are here all signed by Johann Cristopher Claussner instead of the appropriate artists and the views and other plates are lacking the signatures found in earlier states. With four added maps and views, not found in other copies of this edition. Fine copy in a beautiful binding, with two small restorations to strengthen the folding of the maps and one page with a few minor spots. Binding in very good condition, with a small outer part of the hinges cracked, and a bit worn near the edges of the spine.

Schönes und komplettes Exemplar der 'Tossanus-Bibel', die zu den am aufwändigsten gestalteten und gedruckten illustrierten Prachtbibeln des Basler Thurneysen Verlags zählt. Basel profilierte sich sich nach dem Dreissigjährigen Krieg neben Strassburg, Frankfurt am Main sowie Nürnberg als eines der Zentren des Bibeldrucks. Sowohl im ausgehenden 17. wie auch im Verlauf des 18. Jahrhunderts verliessen nicht wenige gewichtige Bibelausgaben die Basler Druckerpressen. Die vorliegende Edition der Gebrüder Emanuel und Rudolf Thurneysen folgt in ihrer Textredaktion überraschenderweise nicht der neun Jahre zuvor im selben Verlag von den beiden einheimischen Pfarrern Friedrich Battier und Theodor Gernler edierten Version der Luther-Bibel (die sogenannte 'Thurneysen-Bibel'), sondern vielmehr der von dem Heidelberger Kontroversaltheologen Paul Toussain [latinisiert Paulus Tossanus (1572-1634)] veröffentlichten Bearbeitung. Die Glossen und Auslegungen Toussains gehen auf dessen 1617 in Heidelberg veröffentlichte Bearbeitung und Kommentierung der Luther-Bibel zurück. Toussain war der Sohn des reformierten Theologen Daniel Toussain. Nach dem Theologiestudium in Heidelberg, Altdorf, Genf und Leiden sowie anschliessenden Rektoraten in Deventer und Amsterdam erwarb Paul toussain 1599 in Basel den theologischen Doktorgrad. Danach wirkte er in verschiedenen Pfarrämtern in Frankenthal und Heidelberg, wo er seit 1613 nebenbei auch noch Dogmatik lehrte. Als Delegierter der Kurpfalz nahm er 1618 auch an der Synode der reformierten Gemeinden der Niederlande in Dordrecht teil. Für seine Bibeledition von 1617 griff Toussain auf die Uebersetzungen der Luther-, der Genfer- sowie der Zürcher-Bibel zurück, deren Texte er miteinander verglich, um so hinter die eigentliche Bedeutung des Bibeltextes zu gelangen. Sein Beitrag besteht denn auch vor allem in der Auslegung und neuen Glossierung im Sinne reformierter Glaubenshaltung. Das Abendmahl ist demnach Gedächtnisfeier und Brot und Wein versteht er als heilige Wahrzeichen (Siegel) für Leib und Blut Christi. Die Textversion des dritten und vierten Buchs Esra sowie des dritten und vierten Buchs der Makkabäer - von Martin Luther selbst nicht in den Corpus der biblischen Texte aufgenommen - folgt der Uebertragung durch Daniel Cramer (1568-1637), Pastor an der Marienkirche in Stettin. Weiteren Anteil an den revidierten Texten hatten Giovanni Diodati, Johann Schönauer, Bonaventura von Brunn, Peter Werenfelss, Theodor Wohlleb und Daniel Schönauer. Das Vorwort des Zürcher Theologen und Professors für Ethik und Naturrecht am Carolinum, Johann Jakob Ulrich (1683-1731), datiert vom 4. Dezember 1728. Nebst der prächtigen Weltkarte nach Nicolas Visscher, finden sich eine weitere doppelblattgrosse "Erklärung, oder geographische Beschreibung' des zwischen Euphrat und Tigris lokalisierten 'Paradieses', die Reiseroute und "Beschreibung der viertzig-jährigen Reise der Kinder Jsrael, eine Regionalkarte von Israel (Beschreibung des jüdischen Landes), von Aegypten und Kleinasien (Anatolien - 'Erklärung der Land-Tafel, über die Reisen der Apostel') und eine doppelblattgrosse Ansicht in Vogelschauperspektive der Stadt Jerusalem. Die sechszehn Kupferstich-Tafeln zeigen diverse Kostüme, Altertümer etc. Alle Tafeln wurden gestochen von dem 1778 gestorbenen Zuger Kupferstecher Johann Carl Joseph Störchlin. - Sehr schmaler und kurzer Tintenfleck im Oberrand der ersten 8 Bll., sonst ein tadelloses Exemplar. Fine and complete copy of the so-called 'Tossanus-Bible', one of the most ambitious Bible issues printed by the Basel publishers Thurneysen. After the end of the Thirty-Years-War the city of Basel could distinguish itself - along with Strasbourg, Frankfurt and Nuremberg - as a centre of Bible editions. Rather heavy bible prints left the presses in the 17th and 18th centuries. The present edition published by the brothers Emanuel and Rudolf Thurneysen is surprisingly based on the text edited in 1617 by the Heidelberg controversial theologian Paul Toussain [latinized Paulus Tossanus (1572-1634), and not on the 'Thurneysen Bible' edited in 1720 by the two domestic pastors Friedrich Battier and Theodor Gernler. Toussain used the translations of Luther, the Geneva and the Zurich Bibles. Tossanus added new glosses and instead of Martin Luther's preface we find his own and that of J. J. Ulrich (1683-1731) which have an entirely different spirit. The text version of the third and fourth book of Ezra and the thirt and fourth book of the Macabees - not incorporated by Luther - follows the translation by the Stettin pastor Daniel Cramer (1568-1637). Further contributions are indebted to Giovanni Diodati, Johann Schönauer, Bonaventure of Brunn, Peter Werenfelss, Theodor Wohlleb and Daniel Schönauer. The six double page maps show the world (after Nicolas Visscher), Palestine, Egypt and Asia Minor (Anatolia), and one depicts the city of Jerusalem from the bird's eye view. The other engravings depict costumes, antiquities etc. All plates were engraved by the Swiss engraver Johann Joseph Stoerchlin from Zug. - Ms. owner's entry and long note on fly-leaf by Ursula Bindschedler, dated 1819. - Narrow and short ink stain in upper margin of first eight leaves, else a neat copy. - Contemporary leather binding, back on six raised bands, each cover with the four corner and central brasses, with two brass clasps, gilt purple brocade doublures (back worn at head and tail).
