MEERTEN-SCHILPEROORT, A.B. VAN. Kinderbijbel, of Bijbelsche Verhalen voor Jonge Kinderen, bij het zien van Bijbelsche prenten aan 's moeders schoot. Tweede druk. Amst., P.N. van Kampen, 1849.
Complete set of a children's bible for the very young, meant to be read aloud when showing them biblical pictures. It was the last work published by the popular Dutch children's author Mrs. Van Meerten-Schilperoort, and written for her own grandchildren. In the preface the author explains that this bible should be used before turning to the children's bible by C. Schmid, just like Schmid should be used before turning to the excellent children's bible by Van der Palm. The present bible was especially meant for the young and inexperienced teachers of the nursery schools, which is also the reason why the book was not illustrated, as school plates were to be used. For the mothers the author recommends the print-bible by Picard and Houbraken, but vents the hope that soon an appropriate picture-bible in lithographs will be published, as there certainly is a need for such a work. The first edition was published in 5 parts with 2 plates in each part. Still the present second edition for schools is complete in 4 parts, with the author's farewell to the children at the end, and without illustrations.

Aus der Einleitung: "The volume of essays here presented is not strictly about biblical ethics, but about ethics and the Bible; yet Ebeling's distinction, applied to the essays, yields an interesting result. Some of the essays describe what the Bible contains on matters ethical, while others imply that ethics can or should be in accordance with the teaching of the Bible. Most contributors appear to accept that the Bible's ethics can or should be in some way normative for religious, and specifically, Christian communities. Given that a majority of contributors work at institutions such as seminaries, where there is an unwritten, if not written, commitment to the Bible as a foundation for faith, it should not be a surprise that so many of the essays take the Bible to be normative. But this volume also contains contributions presenting formidable arguments against the possibility of using the Bible in ethics, arguments in addition to the well-known problem that the Bible contains ethical material that can be offensive to modern sensitivities, and that it appears to have little or nothing to say about modern problems such as the morality of manufacturing or possessing nuclear weapons. CONTENTS: Trends and aims; The Biblical narrative; Prophecy; The law; Poetry; The wisdom literature; Teaching the bible: a summary. Adar (1917-1991) was an Israel educator. He wrote extensively, his most important work being Ha-Arakhim ha-Hinnukhiyyim shel ha-Tanakh (1954; Humanistic Values in the Bible, 1968) . In this work Adar attempted to use literary analysis to reveal the educational values in the biblical narrative.
