Charlotte Bronte (1816 - 1855) ist die älteste der drei außergewöhnlichen Schriftsteller-Schwestern. Jane Eyre markierte Charlotte Brontes Durchbruch und trug ihr wegen der freimütigen Ansichten ihrer Heldin zeitlebens den Ruf einer moralischen Umstürzlerin ein. Jane Eyre ist intelligent und charakterstark, das macht sie zur Außenseiterin. Charlotte Bronte veröffentlichte "Jane Eyre - eine Autobiographie" im Jahr 1847 unter dem Pseudonym Currer Bell. Der Roman wurde von der Öffentlichkeit so gut aufgenommen, daß 1848 schon die dritte Auflage erscheinen konnte. Mit dramaturgischen Elementen der Gothic novels (Schauerroman) und des Sensationsromans schuf Charlotte Bronte eines der differenziertesten Frauenporträts der englischen Literatur. Von der feministischen Literaturkritik wird Jane Eyre häufig als rationalistischer Gegenentwurf zu Sturmhöhe, dem Hauptwerk Emily R Brontes, interpretiert. Mit ihrem Roman steht Charlotte Bronte einem Defoe in der Erzählweise deutlich näher als etwa Dickens oder Thackeray, obwohl sie weniger Sozialkritik oder naturgetreue Milieudarstellungen in den Vordergrund rückt, als vielmehr das Seelenleben ihrer Protagonistin.Ein wenig werkgetreuer Hollywoodfilm aus dem Jahre 1944 [mit Joan Fontaine und Orson Welles] reduzierte die Handlung allerdings zu sehr auf romantische Aspekte.; SEHR GUTER ZUSTAND [hehöbu]
