The Mystery of Edwin Drood First Edition in Book Form in the Scarcest Variant Binding on the Market 1870. Published by Chapman and Hall [London] in 1870 this is the last of Dickens' novels that was written (incomplete) just before his death. This example is in the very rare secondary binding cloth variant that is described by Walter E. Smith in his book 'Charles Dickens in the Original Cloth' as follows: "The second, which I have never seen, is described by John Carter (Binding Variants, p108) as binding C and it appears to match the binding for David Copperfield, Bleak House, and Little Dorrit: "Dull green coarse diaper; sides blocked in blind with a border and large centre ornament; spine blocked in blind with bands and three heart-shaped ornaments, and lettered in the plainest of gilt capitals. No inserted advertisements in any copies I have seen." This binding is the rarest of the three." The boards, though green are faded and discoloured, with marks and stains and knocks to the top and bottom of the spine. The decoration as described above is still visible The book contains twelve black and white plates by S.L. Fildes (one with a closed tear and no loss) and a head and shoulders portrait illustration of Dickens with his facsimile signature. The end papers are yellow and internally there is foxing (particularly to the front) which is light and hinges broken to the front of the book. This book includes the flaws as stated in Smith: p. 1, lines 1 and 2 "Tower" for "town" p. 4 line 23 no punctuation after "clergy" p. 10 line 5 no punctuation after "it" p. 28 4 lines up from the bottom "it's" for "its" p. 43, last line "I" dropped slightly in "intent" Also included is a statement by Chapman & Hall that reads as follows: "All that was left in manuscript of Edwin Drood is contained in the Number now published - the sixth. Its last entire page had not been written two hours when the event occurred which one very touching passage in ti (grave and sad but also cheerful and reassuring) might seem almost to have anticipated. The only notes in reference to the story that since been found concern that portion of it exclusively, which is treated in the earlier Numbers. Beyond the clues therein afforded to its conduct or catastrophe, nothing whatever remains; and it is believed that what the author would himself have most desired is done, in placing before the reader without further note or suggestion, the fragment of THE MYSTERY OF EDWIN DROOD. 12th August, 1870" A wonderful and extremely important Dickens novel. Sa derniere page entiere n'avait pas ete ecrit de deux heures lorsque l'evenement a eu lieu dont une tres touchante passage en ti (grave et triste, mais aussi joyeuse et Rassurant) peut sembler presque avoir prevu. La seule note en reference a l'histoire qui, depuis, ete trouve preoccupation que partie de celle-ci exclusivement, qui est traitee dans le precedent Numbers. Au-dela des indices y sont offertes a sa conduite ou une catastrophe, rien de ce qui reste , Et l'on croit que ce que l'auteur aurait lui-meme souhaite se fait plus, en placant devant le lecteur sans autre note ou suggestion, le fragment de LE MYSTERE DE EDWIN DROOD. 12 aout,...
