1st edition, rebound with beige leather spine and corners, and white, green and beige marbled boards. New beige endpapers. 1834 first edition. Woodcut illustrations; frontis, and six plates showing animals and cuts of meat (all very good condition). Plates have been rebound after introduction and before chapter one. Pages have some browning, chipping, foxing and edgewear, but are very good. There is sticker on front pasted down endpaper showing previous owner's name and address (printed). Chapters include Cleanliness and Punctuality - Dirty hands and blowzy hair are likely to prejudice an employer against your culinary productions!; different methods of cooking; game; butchers meat; jellies; beer and wine (with losts of recipes and suggestions for home brewing); bread; miscellanies, which includes cleaning, gardening and home remedy suggestions. This book is by the author of "Cottage Comforts", which was first published in 1825, for the poorer working classes (how many of them would have been able to afford to buy it in the first place?) Mrs Copley, who was a strict Baptist, had over forty books published in her lifetime, including domestic books, children's stories, text books, biographies and history. Her most important book, was considered to be "A History of Slavery and its Abolition", published 1836. This is a Very Good Copy of this book in original full black calf with gilt title lettering to spine.The book has an engraved frontispiece plus engraved title page and there are a further five (collated engravings) This copy has NO previous names or inscriptions present.There is a little stitching showing through at the front gutter hinge with some overall wear to boards but content to grade this copy as ''Very Good'' Corners are a little knocked with some sporadic foxing internally mostly affecting page margins and the rear of plates.A decent copy then for the collector of antiquarian or early cookery titles.8vo (iv) plus table of contents 838pp Undated Circa 1927 as one or two plates indicate that date.
