Sotheby & Co. Catalogue of an important collection of early bibles (mostly English), the property of George Goyder, esq. [ Sotheby & Co., auction catalogue, sale date: 23 June, 1958. ]. Sotheby & Co., London, auction catalogue for the sale held on 23rd June, 1958.
Among the highlights noted were the following: William Tyndale's version of the Pentateuch, 1530-34; and rare editions of his New Testament, 1536, 1548, 1549 and 1550; Coverdale's Bible, 1537, and his New Testament, 1538; first editions of the "Matthew's" version, 1537, the "Great" Bible, 1539, the Genevan version, 1560, and the Douai versions, 1582-1610. From the introduction: "The earliest English Bibles have become so rare in recent years that it would be extremely difficult to-day to form a collection at all comparable with the one now offered. All the versions before the Authorized of 1611 are represented in it, beginning with Tyndale's Pentateuch, 1530-34, the first translation of any considerable portion of the Bible into the vernacular and a landmark in Engüsh literature, and five editions, all of the utmost rarity, of his New Testament, including the most nearly complete copy known of the edition printed by Froschover at Zurich, 1550. Among others of particular interest are the two editions of Coverdale's New Testament, printed in Southwark by James Nicolson, 1537-38; first editions of the "Matthew's" version, 1537 - the Pembroke copy in the typical 18th century red morocco of that library - the "Great" Bible, 1539, the Genevan version, 1560, very rarely found complete, and fine copies of the Douai versions."
Printed wrappers, small 4to, 24 pp, 5 plates, ills. 24 lots. Wrappers slightly marked, "Price list" written on front wrapper, otherwise Good. List of prices realized and buyers loosely laid in.
