Extremely rare booklet with a description of a garden, or amusement park, called 'Oude Doolhof' (Old Labyrinth or maze), published as a souvenir or 'flyer'. This first Doolhof, called the 'Oude Doolhof', was founded at the Looiersgracht at Amsterdam by the wine merchant and inn-keeper Vincent Jacobsz. Coster before 1625. In fact it was a kind of combination of a seventeenth-century 'Madame Tussauds' and an amusement park. It remained in existence until 1862. The garden was composed of a labyrinth in which fountains and automata were displayed, showing historical & biblical figures and spectacles. The automata were (groups of) figures that moved and produced noise or music by means of ingeniously constructed watch mechanisms. The illustrations, according to Franken implicitly after C. van de Passe (who lived also at the Looiersgracht at the time), show the sights and spectacles of this labyrinth:- Bacchus and Ariadne flanked by a triumphal chariot pulled by two tigers and spouting fountains, followed by an explanation by Jan Vos, regent of the Amsterdam Theatre (full-page plate).- Statues of the French King Henry I, Gustav Adolph and his wife, Queen Christina of Sweden, William the Silent, the young Prince William II and his wife Maria Stuart, the daughter of Charles I, Prince Maurits, the Duke of Alva, a Chinese, and Eva Vliegen a woman who didn't eat during the last 32 years.- Scenes with Granida (from a play by P.C. Hooft), Venus and Mars caught by Vulcanus (half-page plate) with explanations and songs by Jan Vos.- The palais of Salomon, 'Het Heerlijck Paleis van den Koninck Zalomon, den derden Koninck van Israel', with many moving figures (half-page plate).- Jochem playing the bagpipe, 'Jochemus sit en speelt hier vast Verscheyden Deuntjes by de tast (...)', showing an automaton of playing bagpipe (half-page plate).- David and Goliath, 'David voor Israels Heer Gekommen Heeft door een slinger den Reus Verwonnen (...)', showing David and a gigantic wooden statue of Goliath on either side of a soldier holding a shield, all three wooden statues still present in the Historical Museum in Amsterdam (folding plate). The present edition (according to Spies this is the first edition with text by Jan Vos) is the first Houthaeck edition, a second appeared in 1650. Chrispijn de Passe was responsible for the first edition of ca. 1645 (before 1648). Another edition appeared in 1657, published by D.D. Mansvelt at Amsterdam, followed by W. Gort's edition of 1668 in the same city.Inspired by the great succes, a second labyrinth was founded by the owner of the inn 'De Oranje pot' also at the Looiersgracht. This 'Nieuwe Dool-hof' was bought by David Lingelbach s(a refugee from Frankfurt) and his sons Philips (a watch maker), Johannes and David. In 1648 they moved it to the Rozengracht, where it stood till the beginning of the 18th century.

Joe Karam: David And Goliath: the Bain Family Murders, Reed Publishing 1997 Paperback ISBN: 9780790005645

Public interest in this case will be heightened further when David Bain's retrial for the murders of five members of his family in Dunedin in June 1994 gets underway - this is scheduled for early 2008. The book is complemented by over 20 colour photographs, maps and drawings and also contains appendices. Joe Karam presents his argument in 'David and Goliath', the title giving an indication of the books contents - David Bain against much bigger adversaries being the police and the Crown. Karam examines the evidence in the case against David Bain and suggests alternative scenarios to the facts presented by the Crown. He also looks aat the evidence of the secret witness that never got to testify and the behaviour of the police involved in the investigation. Karam argues it was a murder/suicide with the father as the culprit. He puts forward a motive and supporting evidence for this theory. , condition:Good
