"This was the first of the Christmas books, and its form of production, though it was costly, added to its fine literary and sentimental values, reflected credit on the author Artistically it was a pronounced success and from a literary aspect it has delighted millions of readers. It may readily be called the Bible of Christmas and the Author its Apostle Dickens attempted color in the title page and the etchings for the first and incidentally last time." - John Eckel, 'The First Editions of Charles Dickens' Published by Chapman & Hall, this is the rare first edition, first issue of 1843 in the original reddish brown vertically ribbed cloth; the front and back covers are blind stamped with a single line border and a decorative border of holly and ivy design which expands in the corners A gold wreath of holly and leaves is centred on the front board and encloses the title and author's name The boards are in Good condition with the gilt to the front still quite bright and blind stamp decoration to the front and back still visible The spine has faded (but still possible to see lettering and decoration under a magnifying glass) and has an old repair along its length; with small loss to the top and bottom of the spine giving an uneven surface An attractive and rare set of first state boards for this rare first edition, first issue Dickens classic, with green endpapers that have faded slightly to produce a green and white effect The Half Title Page with the title in blue print, followed by the Frontispiece in colour The Title Page has 'A Christmas Carol' in red print with 'In Prose Being a Ghost Story of Christmas' in blue print and 'A Ghost Story of Christmas' in Gothic letters, as required All of the Title Page is encased with a thin blue line border with decorations to the corners The reverse of the Title Page has the printers as Bradbury & Evans in blue print, with the next page bearing a wonderful Preface by Dickens dated December 1843 The first page of the novel bears another issue point for the First Edition, First Issue of "STAVE 1." to the top of the page which is consistent with the Contents Page, but inconsistent with the book's other pages where the other chapters are labelled "Stave Two", "Stave Three", etc Additional issue points include, but are not limited to the following: Page 6 line 4 "w" in the word "was" dropped slightly Page 33 line 15 "t" in the word "this" dropped slightly Page 36 line 3 "c" in the word "come" slightly high Page 36 line 11 spacing in "h is" with a slightly dropped "s" Page 49 line 2 misplaced hyphen "and-bye ways" Page 52 line 18 first "Nothing" crocked Page 56 line 7 spacing in "I' ll" All 8 illustrations by John Leech (in colour) and W.J. A rare opportunity to own the First Edition, First Issue of Lewis Carroll's Alice Through the Looking Glass with the error on page 21 in line 2 of the Jabberwocky verse of "wade" in place of "wabe". This error was corrected in subsequent editions Also, page 98 which is not the start of a chapter, is unnumbered It is also interesting to note that this book contains the poem to the end of the book (untitled) with the first letter in each line when taken in order spells Alice Pleasance Liddell the real life Alice The original red boards with three line gilt border to both the front and back boards with a gilt illustration to the centre of the front board of the Red Queen; and the back board with the gilt illustration to the centre of the White Queen The boards are in Good condition with stains, rubbing and fading to the front and back boards and to the spine; corner knocking; fraying to the top and bottom of the spine; and cocking of the boards.
