[SATIRE - GERMAN - UNIVERSITIES]. (Rostock?, no pr.), 1627.
Very rare collection of popular humorous texts (facetiae), reprinted many times in the 17th centuries. The collection was first published in 1600 containing only twelve titles and was later placed on the Papal Index. The collection mainly consists of sham dissertations, mock disputations and so-called Macaronic poetry, normally a form of light or comic poetry in which foreign (usually Latin) words or phrases are introduced into vernacular sentences and vernacular words tricked out with Latin inflections, making intentionally barbarous neologisms. The parts of the collection of facetiae - mostly also published separately - were often published with false imprints and fictitious author names, for example 'Dionysius Bacchus' & 'Blasius Multibibus' as the authors of a dissertation on drinking. The 17 parts are mostly about sex and drinking, mostly in Latin but one of them in German (nr. 2) and together they provide a humorous, interesting and wonderful view on daily student live at the German Universities during the 16th and 17th centuries: - The collection is preceded by the general title (Facetiae facetiarum ...), printed in red and black with only the year of printing: '1627' (verso blank), followed by a leaf with citations from Pliny, Aristotle, Plato and Aenea Silvius.- 1. Christophorus FAHRENHORST, De Bancorottorum pessimo atque horrendo scelere practico dissertatio politica. Rostock, Aug. Ferberus, 1625. With title printed in red and black. (12), 83, (6) pp. The work is dedicated to the Magistrate of Lubeck and is written in Latin with some German citations and marginalia. The text on bankrupts (pp. 1-83) is followed by laudatory poems by Hiob Lepner, Caspar Blisener, Christ. Wilkau, and Theod. Jodocides.- 2. (24) pp. A dialogue in German on (false) scholarship.- 3. M. OGRAVITTUS & Dacrion CHIPLICUS, Materia mere magistralis multisciorum studiosorum magistrorumqve multivas miserias maleqve moratos magistrorum musis merentium momos, mutilatores, multa mala magistris mentientes, magis tamen mutos in Musis quam mugiles, merulas & mullos, magistraliter meritoque memorans & magnificans. Praesidente ... M. Ogravitto ... A pariter docto et memorabili respondente Dn. Dacrione Chiplico, ... In inclyto Brabantiae collegio de Hosport magistraliter disputata & defensa ... 1627. (32) pp. The Latin text is divided in 132 propositions. The first edition was published in 1598.- 4. Volucrinia LEPIDA & Hasio LEFLER, Theses de cochleatione ejusque venenosa contagione, et multiplicibus speciebus, quas sub praeside Hasione Leflero Narragonensi pro privato ... defendet Volucrina Lepida Stutzerensis ... 1627. (12) pp. With woodcut of a noble couple. The Latin text of this sham dissertation is divided into 41 propositions. - 5. (16) pp. This is a popular mock dissertation on student 'Pennal' usages which includes German & macaronic passages. The 'dissertation' was published for the first time in 1511 (=1611) in Leipzig and is divided in 100 'theses'. Many editions followed till far into the 18th century; also incorporated in the Nugae venales ... (1642).- 6. Cunradus TRENTACINQUIUS & Joachim Eberartus AB HANNOW, Bonus mulier, sive centuria juridica practica quaestionum illustrium: de mulieribus vel uxoribus; ... Gripholdus KNICKKNACKIUS (Pseudon. of Janus Caecilius FREY), Flöia cortum versicale,de flois swartibus, illis deiriculis, quae omnes fere minchos, mannos, weibras, jungfras, &c. behuppere, & spitzibus Schnaflis steckore & bitere solent. 1627. (8) pp. A nonsensical macaronic Latin poem describing the behaviour of a flea biting humans and containing many hidden allusions to relationships between men and women.
