First Edition One of the greatest Seuss rarities - the first issue of the author's first book, signed by the author. The first NY edition, with the boy's shorts in white on the jacket and the front board. The book itself bound in original pictorial boards with professionally restored spine and some colour touching up to the extremities. Bookplate of Martha M Phelan to front pastedown. Further ink gift inscription 'For Martha from "Os" Skinner January 8, 1938' to free front endpaper verso. Above this in fountain pen is the author's inscription 'Cordially - Dr Seuss' (autograph verified by Bloomsbury Auctions). Some brown spotting to title page verso and first page of text. 16 pages. Some fingering towards the bottom of the pages, and one small 1 inch closed tear to one margin, but otherwise very clean. Rear pastedown showing some minor toning. The fragile jacket (with price of1 and description of Seuss to rear return) separated along spine and with several creases and closed tears. Small area of loss to front of jacket near bottom right corner. the whole book housed in a custom made blue cloth solander box with blue morocco spine labels with gilt titles.
