Twee jaar na de berichten over de dood van Maxime Feldman ten gevolge van een tragisch ongeval ontvangt Andes Miskin, zijn vroegere boezemvriend, een brief van hem. Miskin en Feldman waren onafscheidelijk in hun studententijd. Daaraan kwam een einde toen Feldman een kwikzilveren, mondaine jongeman die op iedereen grote indruk maakte door zijn flair en intellectuele esprit de echtgenote van een van zijn professoren had bezwangerd en de universiteit diende te verlaten. Niet veel later zou hij zijn omgekomen in het regenwoud van Maleisie.Maar hoe nu? Een brief van een dode, geadresseerd in een handschrift dat onmiskenbaar dat van Feldman is. Miskin, als jurist inmiddels werkzaam op een groot advocatenkantoor, durft de brief niet te openen. Wel is de ontvangst van de envelop met het daarin aanwezige epistel het begin van een geestelijke en lichamelijke ontsporing zonder weerga.Abdelkader Benali (1975) debuteerde op jonge leeftijd met de roman Bruiloft aan zee, bekroond met de Geertjan Lubberhuizenprijs. Hij schreef nog twee andere romans, De langverwachte (Libris Literatuur Prijs 2003) en Laat het morgen mooi weer zijn, maar is daarnaast ook de auteur van verhalen, poezie (Panacee), journalistiek werk (Berichten uit een belegerde stad) en toneel (Jasser). Zijn werk verschijnt in vele landen in vertaling.
