The Taketori Monogatari, as its commonly known in Japanese is the story of a bamboo-gather. It remains the oldest clas- sical Japanese story, dating from the 2nd half of the 9th century. Some authors believe this book is nothing but the translation of a Buddhist sutra. The actual author and date are unknown. See E.
