Library cancel. ** Writer, historian, and statesman, Guizot became Minister of Foreign Affairs in France in 1840 during the last administration of the constitutional monarchy. His attempt to keep France from war with England was aided by the advent of the administration of Sir Robert Peel in 1841 and his Foreign Secretary, Lord Aberdeen. But Guizot was forced to resign and fled to England in 1848 where he wrote a history of the English Revolution and this, his work on Peel, six years after Peel's sudden death.

xxx+490, xi+512, xi+498pp. Bohn's Standard Library edition, translated by William Hazlitt. Green blind-stamped covers, gilt lettering to spine, engraved frontispiece with tissue-guard in each volume. Some corners lightly bumped, covers are otherwise sound and lettering is bright. Owner's name is neatly inscribed on the title page of each volume and a small number is written the front pastedown of each volume. Contents are age-toned and have occasional pencilled notes and light foxing and a few inner margins exposed. It is a very attractive set. Hard Cover 12mo - over 6¾" - 7¾" tall
