Lens, Sidney. The Forging of the American Empire. New York U. S. A.: Thomas Y Crowell Company, 1971.
Marfree, acidfree Fine 1stEd perf bound in full gray cloth, no DJ; no names, not marked-in, underscored, clearance or discard. Mails from NYC usually within 12 hours. ; 462 pages; \nBook Description * Seminal work on American history from leading US scholar * Only comprehensive history of America from independence until today that focuses on the imperial nature of the U. S. Empire * Highly critical of U. S. Interventionism and 'humanitarian action' \nWhy does America keep going to war? April 8, 2005 \nBy John Green (Hayward CA USA) -\nThis review is from: The Forging Of The American Empire: From the Revolution to Vietnam: A History of American Imperialism (Human Security) (Paperback) \nWhy is America the sole superpower in the world today? Sidney Lens' book helps the reader answer this question, by looking at the history of the United States from the colonial era through the Cold War and Vietnam. \nAt the heart of U. S. Foreign policy lays a desire for American supremacy over the world-this much is painfully clear today in light of the Iraq war. But Lens traces this thread back to the founding of America, taking a critical look at the territorial expansion of the U. S. On native lands, the occupation of Cuba and the Philippines, the "open door" economic policy in Asia and the war profiteering during both world wars. \n\nWhether it's the Spanish-American war or the Cold War, readers can see many reflections of the past in the actions of governments today. "The Forging of the American Empire" is no mere historical narrative, it's a chronicle written so that we can understand what drives the present era of wars and globalization. \nLens' radical, materialist approach to the history of the United States is refreshing, cogent and comprehensive. It does an excellent job explaining foreign policy, but this leaves little room for domestic affairs and opposition to U. S. Imperialism. I recommend checking out Howard Zinn's book alongside this one, for anyone who really wants to understand why America goes to war or bullies weaker nations. \n\n Eye-opening, April 1, 2005 \nBy PAUL DAMATO (Chicago, IL) -\nThis review is from: The Forging Of The American Empire: From the Revolution to Vietnam: A History of American Imperialism (Human Security) (Paperback) \nFor all those folks who loved Howard Zinn's People's History of the United States, this is a great companion piece. Written toward the end of the Vietnam War, It is nothing short of the most comprehensive history of America's adventure's abroad ever written, starting with the conquest of the continent and moving on to the birth of the United States as a world power, and finishing off with the Cold War and the US entry in Vietnam. Along the way it debunks a lot of myths. I think that any activists who is trying to figure out why the U. S. Does what it does overseas can profitably start with Lens.. 0690313098.

Orth, John V.. DUE PROCESS OF LAW - A Brief History. Kansas: University Press of Kansas, 2003.
Cover has some very light staining and shelf wear. Pages have some light underlining, but are otherwise clean and tight. Book in overall great condition! ; 5.25" x 8"; 116 pages; Many rights that Americans cherish today go unmentioned in the U.S. Constitution. Where do these freedoms come from? John V. Orth answers that question in this unique and gem-like history of due process.
No person's life, liberty, or property may be taken without due process of law. What exactly that means has been one of the most frequently asked questions in American constitutional history. Today, the answer is usually given in two parts: what procedures the government must follow and--in exceptional cases--what the government cannot do even if it follows the proper procedures. The procedural aspect of this answer has been far less controversial than substantive due process, which at one time limited government regulation of business and today forbids the states from outlawing abortions.
Due process of law, as a phrase and as a concept, was already old at the time it was adopted by American constitution-writers, both state and federal. Mindful of the English background and of constitutional developments in the several states, Orth in a succinct and readable narrative traces the history of due process, from its origins in medieval England to its applications in the latest cases.
Departing from the usual approach to American constitutional law, Orth places the history of due process in the larger context of the common law. To a degree not always appreciated today, constitutional law advances in the same case-by-case manner as other legal rules. In that light, Orth concentrates on the general maxims or paradigms that guided the judges in their decisions of specific cases. Uncovering the links between one case and another, Orth describes how a commitment to fair procedures made way for an emphasis on the protection of property rights, which in turn led to a heightened sensitivity to individual rights in general.
This unconventional history of the concept of due process heightens the reader's understanding of an important and vexed question of Anglo-American law and constitutionalism. Tracing the evolution of substantive due process through paradigmatic and exemplary cases, Orth explains in understandable terms the sources of controversial judicial rulings like Roe v. Wade..
