Leatherbound Good with no dust jacket Description: Author and philosopher Elbert Hubbard is best known for his essay, "A Message to Garcia, " which was widely published, and distributed to all soldiers in the U. S. Marines and the U. S. Navy in both World War I and World War II. He was born in Bloomington, Illinois and grew up in Hudson, Illinois, and was also an accomplished artist who founded Roycroft. Following the sinking of the RMS Titanic in 1912, he gave a speech praising Mrs. Isador Straus, who refused to board a lifeboat and thus be parted from her husband. Hubbard and his wife met a similar fate just a few years later when they voyaged on the Lusitania and it was torpedoed by the Germans. Elbert Hubbard is the uncle of L. Ron Hubbard. Features: Book is bound in soft, blindstamped leather, and was printed by the Roycrofters. Defects: Heavy rubbing to extremities of covers, leather heavily split at upper corner of front cover resulting in exposed cardboard, corners bumped and worn with cardboard becoming exposed, spine heavily rubbed and soft leather surface rubbed away, gift inscription on one front flyleaf, and minor pencil marginalia to a few random pages (which can easily be removed).
