Contemporary half-leather, spine and sides gilt, 26 x 19 cm - Nicht bei Röhricht und Tobler. - Zweite Ausgabe, die erste war 1819 erschienen. - Sehr seltener Atlas zur biblischen Geschichte mit präzise gestochenen Karten im Originalkolorit. Enthält neben den Karten des nahen Ostens bzw. Vorderasiens auch zwei von Europa, Afrika und Asien und eine des gesamten östlichen Mittelmeerraums. - Vorderer fliegender Vorsatz mit zeitgenöss. handschriftlichen Index der Karten. Die Karten durchweg in kräftigen Abdrucken u. feinem Altkolorit, beinahe fleckenfrei. - Very rare special atlas of the Holy Land and the neighboring countries in the second edition, the first one published in 1819. An atlas to the story from the bible with precisely engraved maps. "Although many attempts have been made to elucidate the geography of the Old and New Testaments, and various works have been written on the subject, it is universally confessed, that no complete atlas has yet appeaered The execution of the copper plates, it is confidently trusted, will give satisfaction to the admires of the graphic art." (Advertisement). - The atlas contains maps of Mesopotamia and the adjacent countries, several maps of the land of Canaan, Egypt, the journeyings of the children of Israel, from Egypt to the land of Canaan, the tribe of Reuben, of Cad, of Manasseh (east and west of Jordan), of Naphtali, of Asher, of Zebulon, of Issachar, of Ephraim, of Dan, of Simeon, of Benjamin, of Judah, the Dominions of David and Solomon, the land of Israel shewing the purveyorships in the reign of Solomon, Sheba with the countries remote from the land of Israel, shewing the track of Solomons fleet to Tarshish & Ophir, the kingdoms of Israel & Judah, Canaan shewing the captivities of Israel & Judah, Canaan after the return of the captivity when it was divided into 3 provinces: Judea, Samaria & Galilee, the travels & voyages of St. Paul, the plan of Jerusalem with the surrounding country, the plan of Tyre, the plan of the city of Babylon etc. - James Wyld, (1790-1836) published Faden's map in 1823, listed as James Wyld, as successor to William Faden. Wyld maintained the high standard of graphic and factual excellence that had been established by his predecessor and his maps are amoung the finest published in the early nineteenth century.- The New College of Oxford holds the edition of 1819. - All maps in clean condition, text only few foxing
