In-4, velin souple ivoire de l'epoque, dos lisse, titre manuscrit en tete et date en queue (pet. accrocs aux coiffes), (1) f., (14), 262 p., (1) f. bl., beau titre frontispice allegorique grave par Picard. Quatrieme edition de ce traite que Richelieu composa lors de son episcopat a Lucon, durant la premiere retraite de la reine mere a Blois. L'ouvrage se presente comme une replique aux griefs des protestants a l'occasion d'attaques lancees contre leur culte par le confesseur d'Henri IV, le jesuite Arnoux, premiere manifestation du " tumulte " et du reveil du parti protestant. Menant de front polemique religieuse et traitement " politique " de la question, Richelieu s'adresse aux reformes sur un ton de menaces non voilees. Il refute avec violence les fondements de l'" heresie " et appelle a la deraciner, en meme temps qu'il demande, dans sa dedicace au roi, de tenter de les convertir " par les voies les plus douces ". Trop neglige par les historiens, l'ouvrage se presente comme une precoce affirmation de la doctrine de la raison d'Etat du futur ministre, de sa volonte d'unifier politiquement et religieusement le territoire du royaume. L'ouvrage obtint un tres grand succes des sa sortie et fut traduit dans plusieurs langues. (Brunet IV, 1292. Desgraves, 'Ouvrages de controverse entre catholiques et protestants', 3641. Sur l'histoire du caractere d'imprimerie (Jannon ou Garamond) qui servit a composer cet ouvrage et son utilisation par Richelieu pour l'impression de ses oeuvres, cf. Updike, 'Printing Type', I, 291. Petite signature ex-libris de l'epoque Tres bon exemplaire, tres frais, grand de marges (190 x 253 mm), imprime sur papier fort.

in-8. 4ff. 342pp. Velin de l'epoque. L'imprimeur Jean Jannon se rendit celebre pour avoir fondu un caractere minuscule appele la "Sedanaise". Cette edition des Epigrammes du poete latin Martial, ne a Bilibis en Espagne, est "un des chefs d'oeuvre de Jannon" (J.B. Brincourt). La marque gravee sur bois et le bandeau ont ete graves par Jannon lui-meme. "Edition recherchee : la glose est imprimee en "petite Sedanaise" (Cat. Goulden) . Trous de ver dans la marge exterieure affectant par endroits legerement le texte. Palau, V, 49 : "Edicion notable por la nitidez de los pequenos caracteres usados en su impresion".

After serving prison time for being a conscientious objector to World War 1, Stanley Morison [1889 - 1967] made significant contributions as a designer and typographer, acting as typographical consultant to Cambridge University Press, the English Monotype Corporation, and the London Times. With Victor Lardent he designed the Times New Roman typeface, and was responsible for several others. In 1922 he and notables Holbrook Jackson, Francis Meynell, Bernard Newdigate and Oliver Simon founded the Fleuron Society, and in 1923 this, its journal of typography, made its first appearance, with Simon editing the first four volumes (published by Curwen Press), and Morison editing the final three from 1926 - 1930 (Cambridge University Press). Typically, "The Fleuron" was a lavish production featuring a wide variety of typographical illustrations, sample leaves, inserts, facsimiles and articles, and this edition is no exception, containing articles on the work of Karl Klingspor (by Julius Rodenberg), the illustrations of J.E. Laboureur (by Paul Istel), William Bulmer (by H.V. Marrot), and a piece on the 'Garamond' Types, as well as a Morison-written essay concerned with the ideal italic. (The 'Garamond' Types piece was written by Paul Beaujon, pseudonym of Beatrice Warde, who would later write the brilliant broadsheet, "This is a printing office." This article considered types mistakenly attributed to Garamond, tracing them instead to Jean Jannon of Sedan, and established Warde's reputation as a first-rate typographer, writer and scholar.) Additionally, another section (24 pages) reviews various types used by presses and publications of the day. In the 'Notes for Bibliophiles' column (edited by Leonard L. MacKall) from the May 1, 1927 New York Herald Tribune Books, this volume is given a favourable and insightful review in which the writer notes, "Besides competent and scholarly reviews of various important recent publications, and shorter notices, there are five excellent essays, all of general interest and all well illustrated," the column concluding with, "All in all, this Fifth Number of the Fleuron is particularly valuable and interesting." This copy is one of 1250 copies on Antique Laid, with another 120 numbered copies on Batchelor Kelmscott paper. Binding and end papers designed by Emil Rudolf Weiss. Editor Morison has signed this copy beneath his name on title page. The dust jackets on these volumes were fragile to begin with, and only about ten per cent seem to have survived in any condition. Decorated peach cloth, floral/trellis spine decoration, 205 pages + Advertisements (16 pages), untrimmed fore- and bottom edges. Bumped/moderately worn corners/spine ends, dusty/faded top edge; dust jacket w/edgewear, chipping/tears to corners, 1&1/2" x 3/4" piece torn from top of front panel (2" beneath top edge), 4" tear at top edge, 3/4" tear to bottom edge of front panel, 2" tear to top edge of rear panel, 1/2" tear to bottom edge of rear panel, chipping, pieces torn from spine ends, previous owner's tape repairs to the various tears, smudging, crinkling.
