Doctor Henry Lichtenstein: Über die Beetjuanas. Als Nachtrag und Berichtigung zu Barrows Auszug aus Trüters Tagebuch einer Reise zu den Buschwanas. Vom Hrn. Dr. Hinrich Lichtenstein. Weimar Industrie-Comptoirs 1807

....[On the Bechuanas. Addendum and Correction to Barrow's Report on Trüter's Journey to Botswana. By Doctor Henry Lichtenstein.] 8vo. 61 pages, plus a fold-out map measuring 8 inches x 10.5 inches (21cm x 26.5cm). Text is in German. This is a complete monthly issue, containing the above mentioned account. Attractively bound booklet style in recent blue paper covers with label. A scarce primary resource, with map, pre-dating the author's book by 3 years. This issue contains the scarce first printing of a substantial assessment by Lichtenstein, of John Barrow's then recently released title, 'Travels into the Interior of Southern Africa.' Lichtenstein's addendum elucidates aspects of the Bechuana people, comparing his own encounters with those in Truter's diary. A fascinating analysis of the Truter-Somerville expedition, most notbale for its desription of the Bechuanas, this account was finally translated and published in Ebglish in 1973. This item is the original first publication from 1807. In 1810, Lichtenstein published the full account in "Reisen im südlichen Afrika". This preliminary account pre-dates his book by three years. By the turn of the nineteenth century, a few Dutch and several multiracial Griqua had settled near the Batlhaping, and reports of their wealth instigated a government expedition to seek new supplies of cattle and commodities for the Cape Colony. An official expedition left Cape Town on 1 October 1801, led by Petrus J. Truter and William Somerville, who were accompanied by John Barrow and Samuel Daniell, and two LMS missionaries Jan Matthys Kok and William Edwards. The party traveled as far as Dithakong, then an important Batlhaping (Batswana) capital under Kgosi (Chief) Molehebangwe. After a two-week stay at Dithakong, they returned for Cape Town, arriving on 6 May 1802. The Eye of Kuruman was discovered by Samuel Daniell during the journey, which would be the source of water that enabled the establishment of a mission there. Significant accounts of this first expedition were left by, amongst others, William Somerville and John Barrow, with well-known acquatint illustrations by Samuel Daniell. John Barrow spent considerable time in South Africa and was instrumental in colonization of the Cape Colony. Together with other members of the Truter-Somerville expedition, Barrow wrote 'Travels into the Interior of Southern Africa,' which was published in 1806 and which described the trip through Botswana, and the Bushman people. German scientist and adventurer Henry Lichtenstein visited the Batlhaping tribes, the most southerly group of the Batsawanas in 1805. He was aided in his exploration by Truter's journal, and by the presence of the missionary Kok, who by then had acquired some familiarity with the 'Beetjuana' people. These are the original pages printed in 1807, and NOT a reprint. This narrative is from a rare multi-volume geographical and scientific journal titled "Allgemeine Geographische Ephemeriden", which issued fifty volumes from 1798-1816 and which encompassed critical contemporary topics of geography and astronomy. Adam Christian Gaspari and Franz Xaver von Zach were editors of this important scientific journal.

This is a beautiful book; black cloth over boards with silver gilt title impressed onto spine, in glossy black & white photographic jacket. Professional writer and PR consultant, author Tony Barrow was The Beatles' Press Officer between 1962 when they issued their first single, 'Love Me Do,' and 1968 when they set up their own management company, Apple Corps. in the wake of manager Brian Epstein's death. Barrow coined The Beatles' nickname of the 'Fab Four,' wrote the sleeve notes for a number of the group's album covers, set up their huge international press conerences, selected their media interviews and fixed up their photo shoots at home and abroad during the touring years, and finally collaborated with Paul McCartney in 1967 to compile the strip-cartoon story booklet that came with The Beatles Magical Mystery Tour recordings. He is one of a tiny handful of surviving eyewitnesses able to write a first-hand account of life within The Beatles' close-knit entourage and the only remaining professional writer from that circle. Few were closer to The Beatles than Tony Barrow, and this is not merely a biogaphy of the Fab Four, but a unique and vividly personal memoir by a Liverpool-born author who knew John, Paul, George and Ringo as friends throughout the height of their fame."
