YULE, Henry.. A NARRATIVE OF THE MISSION SENT BY GOVERNOR-GENERAL OF INDIATO THE COURT OF AVA .
A most important and classic primary book by a British Royal engineer and Public Works Department official of the British government. Sir Henry Yule [1820-1889] was appointed as sec- retary to the mission, which was led by Sir Athur Payre. The diplomatic mission was sent to repair poor relations with the Burmese King and his government, after the disastrous Anglo-Burmese wars. The British goal was to attempt to gain a treaty, and spoils of that war. The mission did result in Britain taking over lower Burma as its prize! * This work is perhaps Yule's best and most comprehensive book on the Burma, the Burmese people, their customs, religion [Buddhism], their great cities, with excellent coverage of Pagan. The lithographic illustrations to a great extent were actually sketched and drawn by Yule himself. They are quite handsome, and some are stunningly hand-colored; others were exectued by Colesworthy Grand an artist, and photographs by Linneaus Tripe. * CHAPTER HEADINGS: Chapter headings are: Journal of the Mission from the Brit- ish frontier to Pagan-myo; The remains at Pagan;Journal from Pagan to the capital; Our residence at the capital; The city of Amarapoora; Excursions in the environs of the capital; Return of the mission from the capital to Rangoon; notes on the intercourse of the Burmese countries with Western nat- ions up to the peace of Yandabo; Notices of the history of Burma from the peace of Yandabo [1826] to the revolution of 1853; Some account of the religion of the Burmese; The mini- sters of state-military affairs-revenues & currency; On the map of Burma-descriptive geography-and population; The Shan states tributary to Burma. * LITHOGRAPHIC ILLUSTRATIONS: The work is lavishly illustrated with 29 superb plates, a few are lacking plate numbers or out of sequence, but comp- lete. The fine plates show excellent examples of elephants, pagodas, temples, Burmese, and unusual hairy-faced woman [perhaps thought perhaps to be half ape-human ?]. With an especially nice hand-colored view of the members of the mission at an audience hall and recption of the envoy; they are seated on the floor, while two Burmese officials are on their bellies prostrate on the floor with hands together in the "prayer" Mudra showing respect to the two royal persons seated upon a high lotus throne; who look like the King and Queen. A good number of the lithographic plates do show "Capt'n Yule" in the lower corner. Several are delicately hand-colored with great skill. * Yule was the 1872 Founder's Medal recipient, "For eminent services to Geography". And also was awarded the Patron's Medal -Robert B. Shaw: "For journeys in Eastern Turkistan, and for his extensive astronomical & hypsometrical observat- ions." In 1889 Colonel Sir Henry Yule was awarded the KCII CBHe; and also received for distinguished service to the Society, to Geography in Scotland, or to public life in Scotland related to the Society. * A truly lovely and magnificent early primary source on Burma, beautifully illustrated. * WITH 13 APPENDICIES: A. On the languages spoken in Burma and the adjacent countries [a large folding chart]. * THE FOLDING MAP: Title:THIS NEW MAP OF BURNA & THE REGIONS ADJACENT; IS INSCRIBED TO SIR RODERICK I. MURCHISON, P.R.G.S. &C...London 1857. It was executed by Yule, and shows the Himalayan Mountains and Mishmeeg at about ca. 28 degrees North at the top, down to 13 degrees at the bottom showing the Gt. Andaman Island and Tenasserim after which is Bangkok and the Gulf of Siam. A portion of China & Yunnan are to the far Eastern area.The map folds down to ca. 16 x 24.5 cm., and has some archival clear type tape on the tender folds and joints, as well as some old paper backing on one fold; A key is shown in the left lower corner, with a note: Names of the tribes in red, which refers to the various tribes sprinkled throughout the map shown in red. The map is done in great detail showing the mountains & their elevations, rivers, cities, and tribal areas, as well as. It is a bit toned, and has a few foxing spots on the folds, by and large in very nice condition for its age. The map is contained in a cloth pocket at the back of the book. In all, there are two other pages showing color maps, one of which has 4 maps on a single page. * CONDITION: The entire work is in very clean condition, and was rebound some time ago in full crushed blue goat leather, using two parts of the old blue gold-stamped & quite attractive spine and cover cloth designs, which are tastefully affixed to the binding. It has clean gray-laid end papers. The verso of the frontis lithograph has some fox spots, with faint & smaller spots to the illustration; the title page is clean & without any foxing whatsoever. Each of the 29 lithographic plates are clean and the small amount of foxing is limited to a few spots in the margin area. Thus leaving the image exception- ally clean. The binding & pages are solid, square and right. The book is complete and in collector's condition. It looks remarkably sharp given its size and large size. Petermann's Maps focuses on the maps published in the famous German journal Petermanns Geographische Mitteilungen. This journal, which still exists today, greatly influenced the development of scientific geography and cartography in Germany in the nineteenth century. Numerous articles have been published by recognized experts in this field, along with a multitude of illustrations, showing maps, prints and photographs. The journal developed into an important publication, setting the standard in the history of the great expeditions and discoveries, and European colonial matters. Petermann's Maps contains a bibliography of over 3400 maps, the complete series of maps published in Petermanns Geographische Mitteilungen between the year of its foundation, 1855, to the end of the Second World War. Besides the bibliography 160 of the most attractive geographical and thematic coloured maps are included in Petermann's Maps. These maps can also be viewed on the CD-ROM accompanying the book.An extensive introduction precedes the cartobibliography proper, placing Petermanns Geographische Mitteilungen in its historical context. The introduction describes the history of geography from the eighteenth century onwards, outlining the development of the study of the science of cartography in Germany. The major role the founder of the journal, Augustus Petermann (1822-1878), and the publishing house Justus Perthes in Gotha played in these developments is discussed at length. The author, Jan Smits, has been in charge of the map collection of the Royal Library at The Hague since 1979. The series The Utrecht Studies in the History of Cartography in which Petermann's Maps appears as volume III, has been prepared under the direction of the Research Program Explokart of the University of Utrecht and is aimed at both researchers and laymen with an interest in these matters.
