Cahill, Thomas. DESIRE OF THE EVERLASTING HILLS: THE WORLD BEFORE AND AFTER JESUS. (The Hinges Of History Series, Book 3). New York, NY: Nan A. Talese / Doubleday, 1999
8vo - over 7¾" - 9" tall 0-385-48251-5 First Edition, so stated. 8vo (6" x 8 1/2"). xii, 353 pages. Two-tone boards. Black paper-covered spine, gilt spine lettering, beige paper-covered boards, deckle edge paper (hardcover binding). Pictorial endpapers. With eight pages of color illustrations. Notes and sources. Chronology. Index of Biblical citations. General index. "In DESIRE OF THE EVERLASTING HILLS, Thomas Cahill takes up his most daring and provocative subject yet: Jesus of Nazareth, the central figure of Western civilization. Introducing us first to "the people Jesus knew," Thomas Cahill describes the oppressive Roman political presence, the pervasive Greek cultural influence, and especially the widely varied social and religious context of the Judaism in which Jesus moved and flourished. These backgrounds, essential to a complete understanding of Jesus, lead to the author's stunningly original interpretation of the New Testament - much of it based on material from the ancient Greek brilliantly translated by the author himself - that will delight readers and surprise even biblical scholars. Thomas Cahill's most unusual skill may lie in his ability to bring to life people of a faraway world whose concerns seem at first to be utterly removed from the present day. We see Jesus as a real person, sharp-witted and sharp-tongued, but kind, humorous, and affectionate, shadowed by the inevitable climax of crucifixion, the cruelest form of execution ever devised by humankind. Mary, while not quite the "perpetual virgin" of popular piety, is a vivid presence and forceful influence on her son. And the apostle Paul, the carrier of Jesus' message and mostimportant figure in the early Jesus movement (which became Christianity), finds rehabilitation in Cahill's realistic, revealing portrait of him. The third volume in the Hinges of History series, this unique presentation of Jesus and his times is for believers and nonbelievers alike (for Jews and Christians, it is intended by the author as an act of reconciliation). With the same lively narration and irresistible perceptions that characterize How the Irish Saved Civilization and The Gifts of the Jews, Thomas Cahill invites readers into an ancient world to commune with some of the most influential people who ever lived.".

Blom, J.C.H. And R.G. Fuks-Mansfeld And I. Schoffer And Erica Pomerans And Arnold J. Pomerans: THE HISTORY OF THE JEWS IN THE NETHERLANDS, 2001 The Littman Library of Jewish Civilization
9781874774518

Hardcover Very Good in Very Good dust jacket Littman Library of Jewish Civilization; 508 pages; This history of the Jews of the Netherlands and the role they have played in Dutch society was originally published in Dutch and widely acclaimed for the breadth of its coverage. It covers both the internal evolution of the Jewish community and its social, cultural, and economic interaction with the wider population. From the first Jewish settlements in the medieval duchies of Gelderland, Brabant, and Limburg to the Jewish community of today, the interaction between Dutch Jews and Dutch Christians has mostly been one of fruitful collaboration which only the period of German occupation from 1940 to 1945 was seriously able to disrupt. The contribution that Dutch Jews have made, and continue to make, to cultural life, to the economy, and to science is recognized as being of central importance to the Netherlands as a whole. The ten eminent scholars contributing to this book each describe Jewish life in a particular period, from the Middle Ages to the present. In doing so they consider the strains caused within the Jewish community by the effort to play a full part in Dutch society while maintaining Jewish culture, setting the discussion in the context of trends and tensions within Dutch society in the period in question. The circumstances of the Jews under German occupation and in the immediate post-war period are also discussed. The History of the Jews in the Netherlands is a definitive, indispensable work for the study of both European Jewish and Dutch history. CONTRIBUTORS J. C. H. Blom, F. Chaya Brasz, Joel J. Cahill, Thomas. The Gifts of the Jews How a Tribe of Desert Nomads Changed the Way Everyone Thinks and Feels (Hinges of History, Vol. 2). New York U. S. A.: Nan A. Talese Imprint of Doubleday, 1998.
Marfree, acidfree fresh prtg w/ maps, index; no names, not clearance, club or discard. Mails from NYC usually within 12 hours. ; Hinges of History Series; 8.6 x 6 x 1.1 inches; 291 pages; \nOnline Rev: Thomas Cahill, author of the bestselling How the Irish Saved Civilization, continues his Hinges of History series with The Gifts of the Jews, a light-handed, popular account of ancient Jewish culture, the culture of the Bible. The book is written from a decidedly modern point of view. Cahill notes, for instance, that Abraham moved the Jews from Ur to the land of Canaan "to improve their prospects, " and that the leering inhabitants of Sodom surrounded Lot's lodging "like the ghouls in Night of the Living Dead. " The Gifts of the Jews nonetheless encourages us to see the Old Testament through ancient eyes--to see its characters not as our contemporaries but as those of Gilgamesh and Amenhotep. Cahill also lingers on often-overlooked books of the Bible, such as Ruth, to discuss changes in ancient sensibility. The result is a fine, speculative, eminently readable work of history. From Library Jour: Cahill argues that the greatest gifts of the Jews are the linear theory of history (vs. The cyclical theory of other ancients) , with its implication that life can get better and avoid decline and the idea of the equality and dignity of each individual that culminated in the declaration that "All men are created equal. " Other gifts include the concepts of universal brotherhood, peace, and justice. (LJ 3/15/97) Copyright 1999 Reed.. 0385482485.
