"Passed On is a portrait of death and dying in twentieth-century African America. Through poignant reflection and thorough investigation of the myths, rituals, economics, and politics of African American mourning and burial practices, Karla FC Holloway finds that ways of dying are just as much a part of black identity as ways of living. Gracefully interweaving interviews, archival research, and analyses of literature, film, and music, Holloway shows how the vulnerability of African Americans to untimely death is inextricably linked to how black culture represents itself and is represented. With a focus on the 'death-care' industry - black funeral homes and morticians, the history of the profession and its practices - Holloway examines all facets of the burial business, from physicians, hospital chaplains, and hospice administrators, to embalming- chemical salesmen, casket makers, and funeral directors, to grieving relatives. She uses narrative, photographs, and images to summon a painful history of lynchings, white rage and riot, medical malpractice and neglect, executions, and neighborhood violence. Specialized caskets sold to African Americans, formal burial photos of infants, and deathbed stories, unveil a glimpse of the graveyards and burial sites of African America, along with burial rituals and funeral ceremonies. Revealing both unexpected humor and anticipated tragedy, Holloway tells a story of the experiences of black folk in the funeral profession and its clientele. She also reluctantly shares the story of her son and the way his death moved her research from page to person. In the conclusion, which follows a sermon delivered by Maurice O. Hardcover Very Good+ in Very Good dust jacket Edition: 1st Edition; 1st Printing B&W Illustrations; Children's Book. Spine ends & corners of book covers have a bit of light bumping and rubbing. Illustrated, paper covered boards have black lettering to the spine and front cover of the book. There is one small nearly invisible crack to the front spine joint where something hard hit the book. The text pages are clean & bright. Illustrated throughout with both black and white and full color illustration. There are a few stray spots of foxing to the text pages. The endpapers are a solid white color. Both front and rear endpapers have started to fox (small dots, with more to the rear pastedown than anywhere else)/. Spine ends & corners of dust jacket have a bit of light bumping & rubbing. Bottom front flap corner has been clipped, but the price is still at the top corner and is two dollars and fifty cents, the correct price for the first edition (PS: the 1960's was a rotten time for Harper & Row / Harper Brothers to be consistent about their first identification and this book shows again, that not all of them are notated correctly -- this is a first edition, but it does NOT state such on the copyright page). The covers of the dust jacket have darkened and have noticeable foxing (rotten pick for paper on this book) There is a small one inch diameter (actually, a bit less) circular chip missing to the spine of the dust jacket. There is some beginning edge wear / nicking to the spine ends, otherwise, the dust jacket is in nice clean condition. Overall, a very good+ copy. "One morning Mrs. Mouse announced to her two Mouse girls that there were five important things to do before suppertime, not counting the surprise."
