Paperback book is in new, unread condition, pages crisp and clean, no stains. No signs of use. Very slight shelf wear on edges of dust jacket from book bins. ISBN 0671001744 1996 edition. 329 pages long. Additonal pictures of condition are available. BOOK DESCRIPTION: Jonathan Swift's satirical novel was first published in 1726, yet it is still valid today. Gulliver's Travels describes the four fantastic voyages of Lemuel Gulliver, a kindly ship's surgeon. Swift portrays him as an observer, a reporter, and a victim of circumstance. His travels take him to Lilliput where he is a giant observing tiny people. In Brobdingnag, the tables are reversed and he is the tiny person in a land of giants where he is exhibited as a curiosity at markets and fairs. The flying island of Laputa is the scene of his next voyage. The people plan and plot as their country lies in ruins. It is a world of illusion and distorted values. The fourth and final voyage takes him to the home of the Houyhnhnms, gentle horses who rule the land. He also encounters Yahoos, filthy bestial creatures who resemble humans. The story is read by British actor Martin Shaw with impeccable diction and clarity and great inflection. If broken into short listening segments, the tapes are an excellent tool for presenting an abridged version of Gulliver's Travels. Embark on a journey with one of the greatest world travelers of all time. Ride with him across the South Seas to the miniature island of Liliput, where people grow no taller than six inches high. Round the Cape of Good Hope to the land of Brobdingnag, home of giants tall as church steeples, and sail on to the exotic lands of Laputa, Luggnagg, Glubbdubdrip, and more. Share Gulliver's incredible adventures, from his singlehanded defeat of an entire naval fleet (albeit one whose ships are toy boat-sized), to his harrowing abduction by a giant eagle, to his unfortunate dunking in a reservoir-sized pot of cream by a jealous dwarf!<br> These are the stories of Gulliver's Travels, Jonathan Swift's classic tale of fantastic adventures in far-off lands, brilliantly retold by James Riordan in rich, vivid prose that captures all the whimsy and satire of the original in the modern language of today's children. The illustrations by noted artist Victor Ambrus are rich and colorful, delicate in detail, strong in composition, and permeated with humor. And the insightful--often scathing--social commentary that Swift wove into his original tale remains intact, providing fascinating reading for adults as well as children. Marian W. Taylor; W. David Baird. Chief Joseph: Nez Perce Leader (North American Indians of Achievement). Chelsea House Publications, 1993-03
0791017087 School Library Journal Gr 8-12-A clear and sympathetic portrait of the Nez Perce leader. Because of their cultural background, white settlers, soldiers, and statesmen tended to cast Indian groups in their own political molds. Hence, when Young Joseph came to be speaker for his people, he was considered to be ''Chief.'' Taylor explains that the subject regarded himself more as a counselor and representative than as an equivalent of a president or king. This misunderstanding was exacerbated by the whites' casting the hunter/gathering Indian way of life, which demanded a great deal of territory, into one in which they should be content with small plots of land like the farmers and settlers. As with accounts of other tribes and their leaders, this biography is about a man whose adult life was spent trying to retain the traditional lands and way of life of his people. Numerous black-and-white archival photos and reproductions accompany the text.-George Gleason, Department of English, Southwest Missouri State University, Springfield Annotation Presents the life and times of the Nez Percae Indian chief who led his people on a great trek to escape the injustices of the American government. Linda Thompson. The California People (Thompson, Linda, Native Peoples, Native Lands.). Rourke Publishing, 2003-07
1589527534 Barbara Troisi - Children's Literature Readers are offered an overview of California's Native American tribal history, origin, and culture from earliest times to today in a succinct and timely style. The design and layout features stunning scenery and artifacts related to each nation in warm brown, black, and colored tones that serve as a backdrop enhancing the content of the four chapters. The author follows the chilling path of demise of the fifty original tribes as they attempted to adapt to uprooting, destruction of habitat, and disease-plights set in motion by missions, the Gold Rush, European migration, and ultimate exile to isolated, unwanted lands. Everyday patterns of daily life based on earth and nature are highlighted with tales of creation, lifestyles, and beliefs. Inserts touch on artisans, skilled craftwork, or events that reveal present day renewal and revitalization. In addition to the period prints, line drawings, and maps, readers will find a timeline, glossary, book list, websites, and index. This title from the "Native People Native Land" series introduces a significant amount of information that will entice researchers to examine other resources and extend knowledge. However, the book and website lists fail to feature the California people exclusively. Find these recommended titles and sites: Native Americans of California by Stuart A. Kallen; Handbook of the Indians of California by A.L. Kroeber; Atlas of the North American Indian by Carl Waldman; Back in the Beforetime: Tales of the California Indians retold by Jane Louise Curry; Native Ways: California Indian Stories and Memories edited by Malcolm Margolin and Yolanda Montijo; Weaving a California Tradition: ANative American Basketmaking by Linda Yamane; Oyate, an organization involved in evaluation of resources by and about Native people includes California book and video titles and a list of titles to avoid. 2004, Rourke, Ages 9 to 12. School Library Journal Gr 4-7-These books have sections on the history, people, day-to-day life, and religious beliefs-including brief descriptions of various creation myths-of their subjects. Unlike many other titles on the topic, they also include a preponderance of information on the devastating impact of the European settlers, and the resulting dislocation and decline of the population of tribes in the region. With colorful graphics and numerous historical and modern photographs of people, places, and objects, these attractive books will appeal to young readers. However, students who read more than one title in the series may find the repetition of certain sections of text (several pages appear verbatim in each book) somewhat confusing.-Sue Morgan, Tom Kitayama Elementary School, Union City, CA Copyright 2004 Reed Business Information..
