Volume one repaired with loss. Lyell was the "founder of modern geology and the great early 19th century exponent of Hutton's scientific gradualism. Trained as a lawyer, he lived off an inheritance and on profits from his famous Principles of Geology. He defined the epochs of the Cenozoic and made key advances in stratigraphy, sedimentology, and paleontology. His original views on earth history held species to be immutable and specially created at the beginning of each geological era. This non-progressive view of organic succession was opposed to Owen's theistic views and taken up by Huxley. A close friend and mentor of Darwin, he admitted evolution after the Origin but never fully accepted natural selection despite having been consulted on the theory as early as 1844. With Hooker, he worked out the professional compromise leading to the joint Darwin-Wallace publication that introduced the theory of natural selection in 1858." Quite scarce and important. LYELL, Sir Charles, M.A. F.R.S. black-&-white illustrations: A MANUAL OF ELEMENTARY GEOLOGY or, The Ancient Changes of the Earth and Its Inhabitants as Illustrated by Geological Monuments, 1853 New York City D. Appleton & Company ; fester Einband / hard cover
8vo, pp. xxxii,512. "Reprinted from the fourth and entirely revised edition. Illustrated with five hundred woodcuts."

hb Bound in original green cloth blocked in blind, lettered in gilt Lyell (1797-1875) was born in Scotland, and studied law at Oxford, before turning to geology. He became professor of geology at King's College, London, and first published his monumental (dare we say "earth-shaking"?) "Principles of Geology" in three volumes, from 1830-1833. His central thesis sought to discredit the catastrophic school of geologists by arguing that the greatest geological changes might have been produced by forces still at work. His work influenced Darwin, and subsequent generations of geologists. By the time of the publication of this edition of the "Manual" his magnum opus had gone through eight editions. Lyell points out in his Preface that "the 'Manual' is not an epitome of the 'Principles of Geology', nor intended as an introductory to that work." He explains that "the first five editions of the 'Principles' comprised a 4th book, in which some account was given of systematic geology, and in which the principal rocks comprising the earth's crust and their organic remains were described. In subsequent editions, this book was omitted, it having been expanded, in 1838, into a separate treatise called 'The Elements of Geology' [eventually] recast as 'A Manual of Elementary Geology'", which is our offering. Our copy shows wear to the boards, with several smaller pieces of cloth absent from the spine. A few pages have pencilling (easily erased), and there is some light foxing throughout. The contents are tight, although there is a slight spine slant. In all, a good copy of an important book.
