John 8 32 And we solemnly promise to watch, and pray for that Mind to be in us which was also in Christ Jesus to do unto others as we would have them do unto us and to be merciful, just, and pure. Mary Baker Eddy I love the prosperity of Zion, be it promoted by Catholic, by Protestant, or by Christian Science. ... I would no more quarrel with a man because of his religion than I would because of his art. Mary Baker Eddy If this . . . work be of men, it will come to nought But if it be of God, ye cannot overthrow it. Acts 5 38, 39 This biography of Mary Baker Eddy by Dr. Lyman P. Powell has been approved byThe Christian Science Board of Directors for sale or use in Christian Science Reading Rooms. It is a fair and intelligent account of Mrs. Eddy s life and an estimate of her work by an author who is not a Christian Scientist but who, as a minister of another Christian denomination has observed her career and the development of its results for many years. Such a book by an independent bi ographer, who has sought information at its natural sozirces, should be of particular in terest to persons who have heard or read ac counts of Mrs. Eddy by speakers or writen who were not correctly informed or were actuated by hostility. Dr. Powell s con clusions as well as his narrations are en tirely his own. " The work of British architects ABK is characterised by the founding partners' belief that buildings should address far more than purely functional needs. Energy and the environment, historical context and user participation are central to their work. Peter Ahrends, Richard Burton and Paul Koralek are particularly interested in the integration of art, architecture and landscape, an approach which has resulted in a series of collaborative partnerships over the course of their careers. This book traces ABK's development, from early landmark projects like the Berkeley Library at Trinity College, Dublin to the highly acclaimed British Embassy in Moscow, which opened in 2000. It also tells the full story, for the first time, behind the most notorious British architectural episode of the 1980s - how ABK won the commission to design an extension to the National Gallery in London, only to have it taken away from them when the regularly outspoken Prince Charles described the scheme as a 'monstrous carbuncle'. UNIDENTIFIED: 1914 - 1918 ORIGINAL MANUSCRIPT HOMEFRONT DIARY HANDWRITTEN BY AN ENGAGING FEMINIST, ACTIVIST FOR SUFFRAGE AND PROUD MOTHER SEEING HER DAUGHTERS VOTE FOR THE FIRST TIME, NEW YORK CITY 1914
Fair
On offer is a super 1914 to 1918 home front World War I manuscript diary handwritten by a teacher in New York City. While the writer is unidentified [there are plenty of clues for local researchers] she is a mature woman born on January 12th 1859, thusly 54 years old when she begins to use her five year book for almost everyday in four of the five years detailing her full life: as a teacher and mother; news of the War; going to operas and other concerts and entertainments; going to speeches by well known feminists [Alma Webster Powell, Katharine Bement Davis]; her daughters casting their first votes after women were given the right to vote and much, much more. Collectors and historians of the war years will be hard pressed to find a diary of Americana with all the qualities our author brings to this book. Here are some snippets: Went with Fred to Vesper Service of Apollo Club, Fine. 1918 Election Day, Mary and Lil cast their first votes. A beautiful day, Jen Whitney came in to lunch. False reports of the surrender of Germany drives people mad with joy. Election day, grand weather. Went to Wilcox's and bought a brown hat. Went out with Lil to get election returns. Hughes elected. Went over to Carnegie Hall with Bessie Gregory and her daughter and heard Schumann Heink. Perfectly superb. Halloween class had an apple rolling and am the gainer of many lovely apples. I went to Nutting's after school and was fitted for a corset. Fire drill at school. Called at Edna Ebert's where her mother lie dead. Poor Child! The school was reorganized on a mixed basis today and I have 20 girls and 21 boys. O be joyful. First day of being a mixed teacher and I lived right up to my name. Hope to get used to it bye and bye. Irving and I went to the Christian Science church. Roosevelt buried today. School closed on account of lack of coal. I went up to #26 and met with a very cordial reception. School still closed. Went up to 26 and observed the cripple class and the deficient children. Mrs Wigglesworth fatally stricken with paralysis. Doctors give no hope. Poor Maud. Lil went to Staten Island to stay overnight. I worked like a Trojan on graduation cards. Fred Mary and I went to the first privated concert of the Woodman Choral Club and heard Merlin Davies. A regular blizzard greeted us this morning. Maud and Mary Ford had to scatter their classes on account of cold rooms. Edison people gave an exhibition school auditorium at 3. Went to the second Damrosch concert and heard Busoni. Liszt program. Fine. Lincoln's birthday but as it is Saturday I get no extra holiday. Went to Damrosch Young Peoples Concert and heard Hofmann play the Beethoven concerto. Went to the Boston Sym Concert and heard Winifred Christie play Liszt Concerto. Took class up to Prospect Park for a recreation period at 2:20 this afternoon. New program in effect. Went to the Apollo Club concert and heard a Miss Seydel of Boston play the Violin, fine. Went with Ida to hear Alma Webster Powell in lecture recital. A very gifted and efficient woman. Went to a Burton Holmes lecture on the Panama Pacific exposition with Ella Brett. It was indescribably beautiful. Took Miss O'Reilly to hear Szumoroska play Chopin. Perfectly charming. A real treat. Fred and Lil heard Hofmann play Rubinstein. Went to the Academy to hear Alma Webster Powell with Gib, last of the series, very good. Took lil over to NY to Macy's and got mixed up in a parade in honor of the Russian envoys. Was invited to go auto riding with Miss Myers but it was postponed on account of high wind. A great day in the world's history. Peace armistice signed and the Kaiser abdicates. A general holiday and the scenes beg description. A gray clear day. Mrs Storey took me on an automobile ride to Jamaica. Went to a debate on Feminism with Gib. Enjoyed it hugely. Went with M to the meeting of the HD association and heard Katharine Bement Davis, a good speaker. Lil went to hear Col Whittlesey of the lost brigade. A memorable day. Irving was honorably discharged from the USA and reached home to stay about half past seven. God be thanked. The book is in rough shape having the front cover and first pages separated from the rest of the book but present. Overall Fair. 16mo - over 5¾" - 6¾" tall Manuscript
