Miguel de Cervantes Saavedra (* vermutlich 29. September 1547 in Alcala de Henares, getauft am 9. Oktober 1547 in Alcala de Henares[1]; 23. April 1616 in Madrid) war ein spanischer Schriftsteller. Der Autor des Don Quijote gilt als Spaniens Nationaldichter. Miguel de Cervantes Saavedra wurde als viertes von sieben Kindern einer verarmten adeligen Familie in Alcala de Henares geboren. Seine Eltern waren Rodrigo de Cervantes, ein erfolgloser Chirurg, und Leonor de Cortinas. Der junge Cervantes studierte Theologie an den Universitäten von Salamanca und Madrid. Miguel de Cervantes führte ein sehr abenteuerliches Leben. Nach Studien bei dem Humanisten Juan Lopez de Hoyos zog er 1569 auf der Flucht vor der spanischen Justiz zunächst nach Rom. Dort trat er als Kammerdiener in die Dienste von Kardinal Giulio Acquaviva ein. Noch im gleichen Jahr ging er in eine in Neapel stationierte Einheit der spanischen Marine. Als Mitglied der Infanteria de Marina nahm er 1571 an der Schlacht von Lepanto teil, in der Juan de Austria gegen die Türken kämpfte. Er erhielt drei Schusswunden und verlor die linke Hand, wodurch er den Beinamen el manco de Lepanto (der Einhändige von Lepanto) erhielt. - Don Quijote [do?ki?xote] (Don Quixote in alter Schreibweise; Don Quichotte in französischer Orthografie, teilweise auch im deutschen Sprachraum üblich) ist die allgemeinsprachliche Bezeichnung für den Roman El ingenioso hidalgo Don Quixote de la Mancha von Miguel de Cervantes, übersetzt Der sinnreiche Junker Don Quijote von der Mancha, und gleichzeitig der Name des Protagonisten. Der erste Teil wurde 1605, der zweite 1615 veröffentlicht. Beide Romane erschienen in spanischer Sprache. Die erste deutsche Übersetzung wurde 1621 (Don Kichote de la Mantzscha) von Pahsch Basteln von der Sohle angefertigt; allerdings ist die 1799-1801 herausgegebene Übersetzung von Ludwig Tieck heute die bekannteste deutsche Übersetzung, die von Ludwig Braunfels gefertigte galt lange als die sprachtreueste und kenntnisreichste." Hinges are sound and all boards are firmly attached with slight cracking of endpapers. Book blocks are tight and solid with no loose or loosening pages or signatures. Pages clean and bright. Celebrated translation of Don Quixote by the Irish-born Charles Jarvis, a member of the literary circle of Addison, Pope and Swift, and also an eminent artist. First published posthumously in 1742 and frequently reprinted, Jarvis's translation is generally acknowledged as being close in spirit to the original. Very nice early edition of the classic work.
