O'London, John: Unposted Letters: Concerning Life & Literature, London George Newnes Ltd 1924 ; fester Einband / hard cover; Schutzumschlag / dust cover; 1. Ed.
Very Good

181pp inc b+w frontis - O'London was the pseudonym of Wilfred Whitten, the magazine's first editor. The magazine ran from 1919 to 1954. John O'London's Weekly was a leading mass-circulation literary paper especially between the two world wars. Newnes intended that it appeal to the 'new reading public' that came to be after the "Great War", according to "'Insects in Letters': John O'London's Weekly and the New Reading Public " an essay by Jonathan Wild in the journal, "Literature & History" in 2006.
It regularly featured examples of some of the best writing of literary giants as well as by young unknowns. Winston Churchill, Rebecca West, Arnold Bennett, Max Beerbohm, and W. Somerset Maugham were amongst its regular contributors, according to Time Magazine for Monday, Sep. 20, 1954 in its announcement of the death of the magazine. None of the essays is by-lined (IE no author listed). Essays include one bemoaning the teaching of Gray's "Elegy Written in a Country Churchyard". Another asks what people "read before there were novels". And the answer is "the literature of 'character'," in the essays of Steele, Addison and Swift. Still another deals with detectives in fact and fiction, and of course deals in large part with Sherlock.
DJ (not price clipped) is edgeworn with sunning to spine and some soiling to spine and is a match to the cover except for the rear panel which features two adverts - one for the magazine and one for one of its other books.. Covers (green cloth decorated and titled in black shows the London skyline at the top of the front board, black titles to the spine. Textblock is clean and tight except top corner of FEP is cleanly cut off and there is some foxing throughout. First Edition - 2nd Impression Very Good Decorative Cloth 5.25 x 6.75"; First Edition - 2nd Impression
