Carlton, Christopher: Oman and Britain Oman's Changing Military Relationship with Britain: Dependence or special relationship? LAP LAMBERT ACADEMIC PUBLISHING, Dezember 2010, Besorgungstitel - vorauss. Lieferzeit 3-5 Tage. ISBN: 3843362734
Oman has received a lot of academic interest due to its strategic position, but its relationship with Britain has not really been covered. Oman and Britain have a long-standing relationship which has changed over time. Now it would appear the relationship is diminished from the high involvement of the 1950s-1970s. This book analyses the relationship from the 1950s until the present day and considers how it has changed. It will use new forms of dependency theory - Security Dependency and Voluntary Dependency to explain the relationship arguing that up until Oman's acquisition of full independent status in 1977 it was one of security dependency. Following Britain's official withdrawal in 1977, the work will show the relationship continues to be dependent. This dependency however has moved from security dependency to voluntary dependency. This book considers the events of Oman's two major rebellions, Jebel Akhdar and Dhofar, as well as Sultan Qaboos' succession and the formation of the army to show this security dependency. It then examines the continuation of the British relationship and the alternatives offered to Oman to showcase voluntary dependency.

Wellsted, [James Raymond]. Narrative of a Journey into the Interior of Oman. [London, Geographical Journal], 1837. ; 1. Ed.
Extract from the Journal of the Royal Geographic Society, vol. 7. - Wellsted's short career was almost entirely devoted to the surveying of the Red Sea, Arabia and Oman, undertaken on a number of expeditions between 1830 and 1837. On board the surveying ship Palinurus he was the first European to set foot in the interior of Oman. Starting late in 1835 from the easternmost point of Oman, Wellsted made his way westward through the Ja'alan region to the Wahibah Sands and then struck north up the Wadi Batha to Samad. There he was joined by Lieutenant F. Whitelock, also of the Indian Navy, who had set out from Muscat later. Together they reached Nazwa, the ancient capital of Oman, and climbed the lower slopes of the Jabal al-Akhdhar, in central Oman. In January 1836 they arrived on the Al-Batinah coast and then turned west, recrossing the Hajar mountains and emerging on the edge of the Dhaharah, the rocky steppe that stretches west toward the Rub' al-Khali. In 1840 he was to publish his monumental "Travels to the City of the Caliphs, along the Shores of the Persian Gulf", one of the best English 19th-c. accounts of Arabia and the Gulf. - Macro 2279.
