Two volumes. Original reddish brown cloth, paper spine labels. pp 8 [publisher's catalogue], [2, blank], (ccxcvi), 322; [6], 496 + engraved frontispiece in each volume (tissue guard in Vol. I). Spine labels a little rubbed; covers unevenly faded; cracked inner hinges neatly repaired; else VG, text is clean, tight and unworn, no owner names. Frere was an English diplomat and miscellaneous writer. He was one of the founders of the Quarterly Review (1769-1846), English diplomat and miscellaneous writer, one of the founders of the Quarterly Review, collaborator with Southey, and a friend of Scott. His "Prospectus and Specimens of an Intended National Work" by "William and Robert Whistlecraft" (1817) was a major influence on Byron in writing "Beppo" and "Don Juan". The collection includes his well regarded translations of some plays of Aristophanes, his Arthurian verse burlesque "King Arthur and His Round Table", his translations from "The Poem of the Cid", the Iliad, Catullus, the Psalms of David, and more.
