(WIERINK, B.W.). Jan Klaassen, verteld en geteekend door Oom Ben. Buiksloot (= Amsterdam), J.M. Schalekamp, (1903).
Very rare first edition of an entirely lithographed and colour-printed picture book for children containing a double story, beautifully calligraphed and illustrated parallel to each other. One story is about the adventures of the dolls of a little girl, and the other about the pranks of the "Jan Klaassen" puppets of a little boy. Both the dolls and the "Punch and Judy" figures had been given to the children by Saint Nicholas. The girl's dolls are very beautiful, and include a Japanese lady and a Surinam woman in colourful dress. The boy's "Punch and Judy" characters include Jan Klaassen, his spouse Katrijn, a young sailor with a pipe, a policeman, etc., and both the dolls and the "Punch and Judy" puppets often play together as well. The show characters also dance and sing together, with musical scores, signed by the composer with the initials J.A.T. The story is told and depicted so vividly that the children could easily re-enact all what happened in a show of their own. "Uncle Ben" was the pseudonym of Bernard Willem Wierink (1856-1939), a fine Art Nouveau artist and pupil of C.A. Lion Cachet. He was drawing teacher and later director of the "Industrie School" in Amsterdam.
Fine copy.
KLKL 725; not in Braches, Het Boek als Nieuwe Kunst.

Large 8vo. Orig. colour-printed and decorated lithographed boards, with "Jan Klaasen" holding the coat of arms of Amsterdam on front cover and circular vignette of "Pegasus" on back cover, designed by B.W. Wierink, alias "Oom Ben". With colour-printed frontispiece showing Saint Nicholas on horseback, and colour-printed lithographed plates throughout, beautifully designed in Art Nouveau style by the author.
