Er war 1917 als Korrespondent einer New Yorker Zeitung in Russland. In Petersburg interviewte er Kerenski und die Mitglieder der provisorischen Regierung, sympatisierte dann mehr und mehr mit den Bolschewiki, begleitete zeitweise Lenin.
