Borba de Moraes, p. 740. French translation of the second improved English edition of Robertson's History of America . First published in 1777, this work deals for the greater part with the Spanish activity in the New World, based on ample bibliographical information and documents in the Simancas archives. The map in the first volume shows the Gulf of Mexico with Florida and New Orleans and the Caribbean Islands. The importance concerning Brazil is secondary (Borba de Moraes). This famous work was almost immediately translated into French (1777), Italian (1777), German (1777-78) and Dutch (1778). A Greek (1792-94) and a Spanish translation were published later. The translation of this edition is a corrected version of the Paris edition of 1778, translated by Jean Baptist Edouard Suard with the additions of the second edition in English. A list of pages with significant changes in the translation is given at the end of the Avertissement. The bibliography at the end, "A catalogue of Spanish Books and Manuscripts," is remarkable for its time. Slightly discoloured or spotted in places, binding slightly worn. Ex-libris pasted on flyleaf in all four volumes.
