Quien haya leido a Winfried Georg Sebald sabe que, en cierto modo, sus libros son una sucesion de pequenos ensayos. Lo que quiza es menos sabido es que Sebald (como hoy J. M. Coetzee) fue un agudo critico literario que, desde su catedra de literatura comparada de la Universidad de East Anglia en Norwick, ejercio su oficio con clarividencia y pasion. En 1985, Sebald publica una recopilacion de escritos sobre literatura austriaca con el titulo de La busqueda de la infelicidad. Su propuesta es que, si por algo se caracteriza esa literatura, es por "la infelicidad del que escribe", una infelicidad que nada tiene que ver con el deseo de morir sino que, por el contrario, es una forma de resistencia. Sebald, el mas melancolico de los escritores contemporaneos, estaba en condiciones inmejorables para hablar del tema, y entre los ensayos aqui recogidos destacan especialmente los que dedica a Schnitzler y Kafka. El Relato sonado del primero es exhaustivamente analizado, con lo que no solo se comprende mucho mejor su contexto, sino que se entienden tambien los aciertos (y desaciertos) de Kubrick al Ilevarlo al cine. En cuanto al ensayo sobre el papel de la muerte en El castillo de Kafka, es sencillamente magistral. Canetti y la paranoia del poder, Bernhard y la satira, y Handke y la esquizofrenia literaria redondean la seleccion. En cuanto a los escritos recogidos en 1995 con el titulo de Putrida patria (el titulo aleman, Unheimliche Heimat, es mas suave: patria terrible), no tienen desperdicio. Las historias alemanas del gueto y los relatos antiantisemitas de Sacher-Masoch son hoy, sorprendentemente, casi desconocidos. Joseph Roth recibe un trato de excepcion de un estilista como Sebald, quien lo reconoce como maestro. Kafka (que fue ya uno de los personajes de su libro Vertigo) reaparece en un brillante estudio sobre la mesianica figura del Agrimensor de El Castillo, y los textos sobre, Hermann Broch y Jean Amery muestran, entre otras cosas, que Sebald sabia ser tambien mordaz. Por ultimo, el ensayo dedicado a La repeticion de Peter Handke esclarece las dificiles relaciones de este escritor con la critica y explaya su saga familiar. Todos estos ensayos giran en torno al concepto de "patria", que, por encima de las catastrofes historicas, es tambien una de las obsesiones de la literatura austriaca, especialmente la de origen judio. Sebald starb am 14. Dezember in Norwich (England) an den Folgen eines Autounfalls. Bekannt wurde Sebald vor allem durch seine Romane Austerlitz oder Die Ausgewanderten, welche lange Zeit im englischsprachigen Raum größeren Ruhm ernteten als in Deutschland.2 Gründe dafür liegen wohl in der Art und Weise, wie Sebald in seinen Werken die Auseinandersetzung mit dem deutsch-jüdischen Vermächtnis darstellt. Seine Texte beschreiben nicht nur historische Ereignisse, wie zum Beispiel die Schlacht in Frankenhausen in Nacht und Natur oder die Schlacht auf dem Lechfeld in Schwindel.Gefühle, sondern auch Biographien, die an solche Ereignisse anknüpfen. Des Weiteren setzt sich Sebald immer wieder mit dem Geschichtsverlauf auseinander und behandelt dessen Problem der Zerstörung immer genauer. Sein Werk Die Ausgewanderten, welches in dieser Arbeit als Grundlage verwendet wird, berichtet über Exilierung und den Verlust der Heimat, über Erinnerung und deren Gedächtnismetaphorik. Die Geschichten der individuellen Protagonisten, Orte und Gegenstände möchte er in seinen Werken festhalten und ihnen eine zeitlose Aura verleihen. Der Begriff der Erinnerung spielt bei Sebald eine zentrale Rolle. Die Aufgabe seiner Erinnerungstheorie beruht darin sich der Vergangenheit tastend anzunähern, welche sowohl seine Prosa als auch seine wissenschaftlichen Essays behandeln.
