BONNARD. Terrasse, Claude. Petit Solfege Illustre. Paris. Ancienne Maison Quantin, Librairies-Imprimeries Reunies. 1893.
First edition of Bonnard's first illustrated book.Claude Terrasse's Petit Solfege Illustre, a remarkable piece of design and typography, was intended to teach children the rudiments of music and features 30 designs by Bonnard to accompany Terrasse's clear expository text. Terrasse had married Bonnard's sister Andree in 1890, so it appears natural that he should choose his brother-in-law to illustrate the work. Bonnard, Terrasse and Alfred Jarry later established the 'Theatre des Pantins' together in 1898.A very good copy - as a children's book it is rare to find copies in good condition.'1. Qu'est-ce qu'un solfege? Un solfege est un livre contenant les premieres regles de la musique.' (From the text).

Oblong 4to. 16 leaves; pp. (i), 30. Original publisher's cloth-backed brown printed paper boards with decoration and calligraphic title by Bonnard. Illustrated throughout with designs by Bonnard - one for each page - each printed against a different colour background (red, green, blue, yellow, light blue and so on).

Bonnard's first illustrated book, here in its second printing (1000 copies) with partly different colouring from the first printing (1000 copies). Ein gutes und sauberes Exemplar. - The Nabis, a group of radical young painters who formed an artistic brotherhood in Paris in 1889, established what was probably the most important artistic movement in fin-de-siecle France, yet until now their work has not been the subject of a major study. The group took its name from the Hebrew word meaning 'prophets', and was composed of artists of various national, political and religious backgrounds: among the members were Pierre Bonnard, Edouard Vuillard, Paul Serusier, Maurice Denis, Henri-Gabriel Ibels, Ker-Xavier Roussel, Felix Vallotton, and Jozsef Rippl-Ronai. - The formation of the group.
