Illustrated with 22 fine coloured chromolithographs, including frontis. portrait of author. 8 pp./ 422 pp./ 441 pp. All edges gilt. Name stamped on free front endpaper. Re-backed with original spine preserved. Endpapers a trifle darkened. Else mostly very clean inside. Lower corners of a few pages are dog-eared, and 2 pages lower corner creased. Else very good.

Illustrated throughout with steel plate engravings (Illustrated Boston Edition printed at foot of spine). Full brown fine-grained leather with extensive decoration in gilt, all edges gilt, 1027 pages. Covers edgeworn, spine quite faded and dried but stabilized, spine head chipped with a corresponding two inch closed tear, short closed tear at bottom of front joint, good hinges, sound text block, foxed and lightly soiled endpapers, generally clean pages with occasional light foxing, name on front free endpaper, no other markings. A worn but attractive copy..

This Complete Works is normally seen as three thick 4to volumes & the publishers supplied title pages & contents pages ( as well as other additional pages of text ) to this end in the last instalment to be published - division IX. A nicely produced edition of Shakespeare with fine steel engravings of female characters from the plays as well as studies of actors playing their most renowned roles. The many illustrations within the text, mainly by Kenny Meadows add a humorous & quaint charm to the whole. Also included is the Life of Shakespeare by 'Barry Cornwall'.

1st edition thus. Decorated cloth gilt, VG. 9 volumes, xvi+152pp, 153-320pp, 321-488pp, 489-544+112pp, 113-280pp, 281-448pp, 449-512+104pp, 105-328pp, 329-529+[38]pp, engraved & letterpress title to the whole in volume I, additional title pages & contents at the end of volume IX, a grand total of 53 fine steel engravings, many other illustrations & vignettes, printed in double column. Stiching to the gathers in volume I & IV defective with a few gathers lose, cloth worn at the head of the spines & corners, sporadic foxing to the fore edges & margins of a few plates, a nice set. Raised bands, small oak leaf decoration on spine. Gilt page edges. Very light surface scuffing/rubbing to edges, no cracking. Binding is tight & square, hinges are sound. Clean marbled endpapers, small tasteful custom bookplate on front fixed endpaper; no other marks. 1027 pp. with glossary. (Glossary and notes, and a memoir by Alexander Chalmers, A.M.). Steel cut illustrations with tissue guards intact. Light foxing to illustrations & tissue guards, all text pages clean and bright. Complete in one volume.
