A.R. Kidwai Illustrator: . Literary Orientalism A Companion, Viva Books Private Limited 2009 ISBN: 9788130912646
New Hardcover . The origin of Literary Orientalism is in the various military, religious, diplomatic, political and socio-cultural encounters between and Christian West and the Islamic East. Major works of Western literature and art contain references to Oriental cultures often emphasizing cultural differences in a hostile manner. Literary Orientalism: A Companion is a systematic compilation of the instances of Literary Orientalism in English literary and critical texts, organized in six categories: aEURc Writers, works and critical studies aEURc Critical books aEURc Articles and conference presentations aEURc Doctoral dissertations aEURc Literary Orientalism and the Arabian Nights aEURc The Oriental Tales and Literary Orientalism The first of its kind, this companion charts out the genesis, evaluation and the present scenario of a fascinating aspect of English literary studies aEUR" Literary Orientalism, a largely unacknowledged and little-known subfield of English literature. It seeks to answer questions such as: What is Literary Orientalism? What does it signify? What are its constituents? Who are its practitioners? What is its scope and relevance? It lists bibliographical details of around 300 critical studies, 900 articles and conference presentations and 400 Ph. D dissertations on the broad contours of Literary Orientalism. Also, it brings into sharper focus the contributions of 45 select British men of letters like Chaucer, Shakespeare, Byron, Shelley, Yeats and Doris Lessing to this strand of English studies. While the bibliographic survey in the book helps researchers and scholars, the lucid and detailed introduction at the beginning makes the subject accessible to students in general. Shakespeare, William: The plays of William Shakspeare (!), from the corrected text of Johnson and Steevens. Embellished with (22) plates. In six volumes. London, John Stockdale 1807.
First Heath or Bensley edition. Large quarto illustrated set of JOHNSON AND STEEVENS' PLAYS OF WILLIAM SHAKESPEARE, first published in 1773 and "considered the best edition that had appeared up to that time, and was long regarded as the standard" (Grolier Shakespeare's Plays, 19). This 1807 printing of their text is beautifully illustrated with 11 full-page plates and 11 vignettes engraved by Heath after Stothard, Fuseli and Hamilton and "holds a place among notable editions of the period because the six imperial quarto volumes were printed by Bensley in close imitation of the Boydell folios." Jaggard, 511. Lowndes, 2264. James Heath (1757?-1834) was the London-born son of a bookbinder. The family originated in Nottingham where James Heath's grandfather Joseph Heath was a bookseller and writing-master. James was apprenticed to the engraved Joseph Collyer the younger in 1771 and became established as one of the leading line engravers of his time. His first major success was in engraving plates for Bell's edition of The Poets of Great Britain. He was employed by the Robinson family of booksellers from 1779 to 1804. He became one of the most widely-employed engravers of the age, producing illustrations for many celebrated works including Lavater's Essays on Physiognomy; Vancouver's A voyage of discovery to the north Pacific Ocean, and round the world; Bruce's Travels to Discover the Source of the Nile; and the frontispiece portrait to Boswell's Life of Johnson. He engraved some plates for Boydell's Shakspeare Gallery, and in 1807 published this six-volume set of Shakespeare illustrated with engravings after works by Stothard and Henry Fuseli on his own account, a substantial demonstration of his huge popularity (Jaggard, p. 509, cit. Peter Harrington Antiquarian Bookseller, London). Original, contemporary binding over five raised bands. Burgundy cloth covers with leather spines and edges. Spines are lettered, numbered, placed and dated in gilt, with gilt rules and ornaments. Full gilt edging. Marbled endpapers and a wide margined text. Outer hinges partly and superficially cracked, but firm; corners partly bumped or slightly worn. Brown shadowing on pages facing the plates; else text and plates clean and bright.
4° (32 x 26 cm). (608),(847),(722),(751),(820),(985) pp. Original, contemporary binding.
