Fair
An archive including two diaries in the form of small notebooks bound in cloth covering the period 1899-1915. The diaries are those of Corporal Lewis Turney and cover his service in the Boer War, his time in the Oxfordshire Veteran Reserve, and the recruitment and eventual death of his son at Ypres in 1915. The diaries are written in a clear hand in pencil throughout, and are in a worn state with occasional loose pages. Also included in this archive are a small carte de visite photograph of Corporal Turney in a rifle's uniform in 1899, a Victory Medal of 1919 for his son Cyril (minor dents to edges and no ribbon), wedding photograph of Corporal Turney and wife (somewhat foxed), some typed details of Corporal Turney and family including a Relief of Ladysmith blue silk armband for the Prince Consort's Own Rifle Brigade, and three early photos of Lewis Turney at Bicester and in his garden. Also included is a simply bound photocopy of both diaries (a copy of which is lodged in the Oxford Central Library). The first diary covering the Boer War is mostly matter-of-fact but sometimes give way to more forthright sentiments e.g. 'We are fighting for the health and safety of our comrades in defence of our flag against an enemy who have forced war upon us for the worst and lowest motives', until you find that he is normally quoting from Sir Redvers Buller. The diary are notes a great many supply and guard rota details. The end of the second diary recounts many letters from his son Cyril who was serving in the 11th Hussars (the 'Cherry-pickers') which was quite a smart regiment for the son of a provincial corporal at the time. Cyril had been in service at Lt. Col Sir Algernon Peyton's house in Bicester and Peyton was instrumental in getting Cyril recruited into his old regiment. Peyton's own son Henry was killed in France in March 1918, serving as Lt.Colonel in the Rifle Brigade. Cyril was killed on May 13th, 1915 carrying ammunition to the front. The way Lewis describes his son's impatience to be recruited, and his hope that it would be all over by Christmas is particularly poignant. 'Maybe home for next Xmas' he writes on December 25th, 1914. A scarce archive spanning this turbulent period of British history. We can send images of this archive on request.
