HIRAIZUMI, Senan.. MOROKOSHI KIMMO ZUI: ILLUSTRATED ENCYCLOPEDIA ON CHINA..
This set is properly catalogued and described in great detail by Kerlin. He notes the fact that there are several variant methods for the binding. That is to say, the complete work is actually 15 volumes, however to economize on the use of covers, several individual volumes have been bound together in a single set of covers, regardless of how its bound, the complete work is 15 volumes. Some cataloguers are not aware of this method of combining volumes therefore they report different volume counts, resulting in misleading bibliographic citations. Kerlin points out the copies they recorded are bound for example in 10, 14 and 15 individual covered parts. We do note, that volume one is also found to be the index to the whole set. Covers vary also in color, some blue, black, and the title slips also vary from yellow on the blue to pink on the black. Embossed covers also vary some with different designs, and some sets have various embossed covers, or are mixed sets. * The work was illustrated by the celebrated book illustrator and Osaka artist Tachibana Morikuni [[1679-1748]; he is also known as Tachibana Yuzei, or Naramura Yuzei, among other "studio names. he used." * Due to the variant methods of binding, the below BIBLIOGRAPHIC note as to contents does NOT always follow exactly the order listed here. This is a "loose" and "general" guide to the contents. These assignments to the subject matter is a "loose" description, but after careful scrutiny of each of the volumes in hand, we have reported the contents found in that volume. * The Japanese text is written mostly in Kanji, and has ample Furigana so less literate people can read the characters and understand the meanings. Being an encyclopaedia, this work was very popular and used as a guide for people to under- stand their environment and world in the mid 18th-century. Certainly, the book was also used to teach children about the world around them. The excellent illustrations are enhanced by the text above which describe objects, flora, fauna of all varieties. One of the earliest and most dependable reference sources of its time. It enjoyed enormous popularity among the peasants and lesser educated people in Japan. A good portion of this work was extracted or derived from Chinese sources, the mother of Japanese writing and culture, which entered Japan via Korea or on occasion directly from China. * The work was published for the first time in 1719, and then also and again in 1796. The editor, Hirazumi [1692-1769] was a celebrated & respected scholar of the period. * A charming work, of a "naive" nature, said to be designed for children, but given the fact, that it contains a large amount of Kanbun [Chinese-Japanese old language] its difficult to conceive of any child being able to read such complex Chinese characters even with the Furigana [Japanese sounds]. * BIBLIOGRAPHY: * H. Kerlen: CATALOGUE OF PRE-MEIJI JAPANESE BOOKS AND MAPS IN PUBLIC COLLECTIONS IN THE NETHERLANDS, pp.460-1; no. 1076. * K. Toda: THE RYERSON COLLECTION OF JAJPANESE AND CHINESE ILLUSTRATED BOOKS, pp.317-318; and states that vol. 1 is on astronomy; vol. 2 geography; vol. 3 the palace; vols. 4-5 personalities and human and legendary; vol. 6 sports and contests. vol. 7 implements, ornaments, ceremonial objects. vol. 8 ships, vehicles, fishing gear, insignia, weapons. vol. 9 weapons, utensils, furniture, machinery. vol. 12 plants, vol. 13 birds and mammals. vol. 14 the dragon, fish turtles and invertebrates. vol. 15 index. This list is to be taken with a grain of salt, as he does NOT distinguish just which edition follows this format; Kerlin does show the exact pagination for each of the two editions. Various bibliographers cite different contents for each of the volumes. Each volume is however fully illustrated. They translate the title to be: ILLUSTRATED ENCYCLOPEDIA ON CHINA. * H. Bartlett & H. Shohara: JAPANESE BOTANY DURING THE PERIOD OF WOOD-BLOCK PRINING, pp.397-8, with an illustration from the set is displayed. Again, they outline the contents of each volume which matches roughly that found in Toda. All bibliographers seem to show volume 1 as something other than the index volume. They also translate this title to be: PICTURE ENCYCLOPAEDIA OF THINGS CHINESE, TO INSTRUCT CHILDREN. * Some cataloguers confuse a similar title: KINMO ZUI, or yet another: KINMO ZUI TAISEI, both of which are 17th century books. They are not related.
