Meticulous attention to historic detail and vivid writing bring an ancient era to life. Unlike most generic vampiric novels that can be quaffed in a quick if entertaining gulp, this book should be savored like a fine wine. The new Saint-Germain yarn unfolds in the Decadence--the second-century period of Roman boy-emperor Heliogabalus' reign. Saint-Germain comes to Rome as, ostensibly, a learned, wealthy merchant. His riches attract a particularly corrupt tax collector, and when he attempts to help an ailing noblewoman, he is accused of corrupting her daughter, whose zealous Christian-convert brother threatens to destroy Saint-Germain with fire. Hardcover Near Fine in Near Fine dust jacket Edition: 1st Edition; 1st Printing Cover Art; Spine ends & corners of book cover have extremely light bumping & rubbing. Black paper covered boards have silver gilt lettering to the spine of the book. Text pages are clean & bright. Endpapers are a solid white color. Spine ends & corners of dust jacket have a bit of very light bumping & rubbing. There is a large purple sticker adhered to the front spine joint of the dust jacket by the bottom edge which appears to have been put on sometime during the publication process -- it is most likely removable with no difficulty. Overall, a nice clean, bright copy. "In the mid-1930's Ferenc Ragoczy, le Comte de Saint-Germain, resides in Spain, where he owns a thriving aircraft factory.
