He began as an engraver in London and became a publisher and land surveyor (c.1783). His New and Correct English Atlas appeared in 1787, followed by county atlases, and the New Universal Atlas of 1808. In 1794 he undertook a road survey of England and Wales, published as Cary's New Itinerary (1798). Cary is best known for his atlases and particularly for his New Universal Atlas, which appeared in several editions. Fordham is rightfully considered one of the century's foremost students of cartography. He is the author of several other important works in the history of Cartography. In all 300 works are meticulously described. This title has always been hard to find. Though once reprinted, all copies are uncommon. Besterman 1169.
