Beecher, Henry Ward [Elizabeth Sarah Garside Senter; C. Beach Bookseller & Stationer]: Life Thoughts, gathered from the Extemporaneous Discourses of Henry Ward Beecher by one of his congregation. Phillips, Sampson and Company, Boston, 1859
Good, cloth, no dj, spine ends frayed, some faint waterstaining to pages. This book was the property of Elizabeth Sarah Garside of Santa Clara and is signed and dated "Elizabeth Sarah Garside/ Santa Clara/ Oct. 1862" and has the bookseller stamp of "C. Beach, Bookseller & Stationer, 18 Montgomery St." 1862 is an early San Francisco appearance and also an early Santa Clara appearance. There is also a stamp on the book of "Eliz. S. Senter" so presumably one is her married name. There is a Senter Road in Santa Clara County and Garsides too.
Vincent, John H. (foreword): Signal Lights; A Library of Guiding Thoughts By Leading Thinkers of Today, Detroit, Michigan F.B. Dickerson Company 1890
Very Good
An exceptional copy. Half leather with crisp gilt floral design and title to face board, plus equally crisp printing to spine which also boasts four raised bands. Attractive red and yellow marble page edges are clean as a whistle, as are pages which are untoned. Only faults are a small bit of wear to bottom corners and the removal of one blank page at front. Tightly bound with no cracking to hinges, either front or back. A compendium of thoughts on a variety of topics including intellectual and physical culture, the importance of home life, the home library, building character, music, making and keeping friends, manners, the practical education of women, business integrity and increasing brain power. A fascinating look at the mores and culture of the late Victorian era, from both a philsophical and religious viewpoint. Contributors include Mrs. Henry Ward Beecher on "Today and Fifty Years Ago;" John Clark Ridpath on "History and Historical Study; The Lessons of the Past Foretelling the Events of the Future; and Mrs. Kate Bearly Ford on "Practical Education of Our Daughters." 672 pages. . Reprint from 1888 No DJ Half-Leather
