Rice, Gerard T. Twenty Years of Peace Corps, Washington Peace Corps 1982 ; weicher Einband / soft cover
During the past twenty years, over 80,000 Peace Corps volunteers have teen busily weaving threads of peace, caring and friendship in the barrios, fields and villages of nearly ninety Third World countries. These threads now encircle the globe. Volunteers have worked-and continue to work-on the frontiers of poverty, ignorance and underdevelopment. This experience has changed their lives and has left an indelitle and positive impression on millions more overseas. During my recent travels as Peace Corps Director, American amtassadors consistently told me they believe Peace Corps volunteers are the most positive American presence overseas. Third World peoples also acknowledge that volunteers have epitomized Americas best qualities. At the 20th Anniversary Conference of Returned Peace Corps Volunteers, in June, 1981, Prime Minister Edward Seaga of Jamaica said: "The Peace Corps. . . is wanted, needed and loved by so many countries of the world." This book illustrates the magnitude of what the Peace Corps has accomplished in the past two decades. It has often been called "the People Corps", a group working hand in hand with host countries in the human process of development. The work has not been easy; but it has not gone unnoticed or unappreciated. Only a few months ago, the Mayor of Sartana Larga, in Honduras, stood in his villages dirt-floored school and said to me, "Thank you, America, for sending us these helpers. We know we are poor. But you are helping us and our children. " In 1981, with development and mutual understanding more necessary than ever, we are again looking ahead and preparing to meet the challenges of the new decade.
