pp: xxiv, 370. Thirty-one b&w contemporary photographs. Glossary. Bound in blue cloth, titled and decorated to top board and to spine in gilt. Russell was born in 1861 at Tivoli, Minnesota, then Sioux Indian territory. He began his career at 14 in the American Southwest as a scout and tracker, and fighting in both the Apache and the Cheyenne wars. After several more adventursome years he moved to Africa in 1893; there he became a scout for the British South Africa Company and fought in both of the Matabele wars. He returned to America to take part in the Klondike gold rush before returning to Africa where he scouted for the British in the Boer War. During that time he became friends with Baden-Powell who used Burnham's scouting skills to form the basis of much of the Boy Scout movement. Truly a fascinating man, of whom Rider Haggard said " In real life he is more interesting than any of my heroes of romance". Burnham died in 1947.
