Seltene erste englische Übersetzung der vollständigsten Fassung von Tausendundeiner Nacht, nämlich jener der ägyptischen Handschriftentradition (die sog. Zotenberg Egyptian Recension, oder ZER). Die "Nächte" gelten weithin als des Islams Hauptbeitrag zur Weltliteratur, und das Werk von Torrens als ebenso sorgfältige wie literarisch anspruchsvolle Wiedergabe des arabischen Originals: "Torrens's translation is a far more faithful rendering of the Arabic original (preserving, as it does, the spirit of the Orient and that most important feature of Arabic poetry, its rhyming-scheme) than Lane's more scholarly version, which renders Arabic verse into English prose" (Hawari, 1992). "[U]ntil the one-volume translation of Henry Torrens appeared in 1838, Galland's work was the only version [of the Arabian Nights] known in England" (S. Shaw, The Muslim World 49 [1959]). Anders als die späteren Übersetzungen von Edward Lane, John Payne und Richard Burton ist die Übertragung von Torrens heute sehr selten geworden (seit 1975 kein Exemplar im Handel nachweisbar). Dies ist zum einen dem Druckort in Indien geschuldet, zum anderen dem Umstand, daß Torrens sein Projekt, das sich auf die ägyptische Handschrift im Besitz seines Kollegen Sir William MacNaghten stützte, schon bald abbrechen mußte. Während Edward Lanes Übersetzung alle Anekdoten mit als anstößig auslegbarem Inhalt expurgiert, behandelt Torrens die galanten Abschnitte des Werks durch Auslassung bloß der anstößigen Begriffe, nicht der ganzen Geschichte. Wie Rida Hawari von der King Saud University in Riad angemerkt hat, gelingt Torrens gelegentlich sogar die Nachahmung der "essentially Arabian monorhyming technique and, by so doing, he gives a true impression of this difficult Arabian practice." - Schönes Exemplar aus der Bibliothek von Clifton Hall, Staffordshire, mit dem eigenh.
