Meiselas, Susan: Susan Meiselas: In History. ; 1. Ed.
Steidl, Göttingen. ICP, New York. 2008. First edition, first printing. At PhotoIreland Festival 2011 this title was selected by Martin Parr as one of the most important 30 photobook titles of the decade. Mint, new, unread; originally shrink-wrapped in publishers plastic foil! Hardcover without jacket (as issued). 200 x 260 mm. 356 pages. 200 black and white and color plates. Texts by Susan Meiselas, Caroline Brothers, Edmundo Desnoes, Elizabeth Edwards, David Levi Strauss, Lucy Lippard, Kristen Lubben, Allan Sekula and Diana Taylor. Edited by Kristen Lubben. Book design by Bethany Johns. Fantastic photobook (Kasseler Fotoforum "24 Favorite Photobooks 2008/2009", Rencontres d'Arles "Historical Book Award 2009"). Meiselas is famous for many other great photobooks like "Nicaragua" (Martin Parr, The Photobook, vol 2, page 252) or "Carnival Strippers" (802 photo books from the M.+M. Auer collection, page 626. Andrew Roth, The Book of 101 Books, page 238/239. The Open Book, Hasselblad Center, page 312/313. 802 photo books from the M.+M. Auer collection, page 599). Since the 1970s, questions of ethics raised by documentary practice have been central to debates in photography. Perhaps no other photographer has so closely and consistently represented and participated in these debates than Susan Meiselas. An American photographer best known for her work covering the political upheavals in Central America in the 1970s and '80s, Meiselas's process has evolved in radical and challenging ways as she has grappled with pivotal questions about her relationship to her subjects, the use and circulation of her images in the media, and the relationship of images to history and memory. Her insistent engagement with these concerns has positioned her as a leading voice in the debate on contemporary documentary practice. Susan Meiselas, who was born in Maryland in 1948, has worked as a freelance photographer since joining Magnum Photos in 1976. Her images, particularly her coverage of hostilities in Central America during the insurrection, have been published throughout the world. Her many books include Carnival Strippers (1976), Nicaragua (1981) and Kurdistan: In the Shadow of History (1997), a project on the 100-year photographic history of Kurdistan. Her most recent book, Pandora's Box (2001), explores a New York S & M club. Meiselas's work has been widely exhibited in both solo and group exhibitions, and her photographs are in the collections of major museums in the United States and Europe.***************Steidl, Göttingen.
