Senators were Episcopalian as were 20 percent of the chief executives in the nation's 500 largest corporations and one-third of all bank presidents and many of the most prestigious lawyers. Ever since the Declaration of Independence (two-thirds of the signers were Anglicans, later to become Episcopalians) , this denomination has ruled the country with a benign, aristocratic hand. This is not the story, however, of a religion. No denomination reports a lower church attendance than the Episcopalians.
