First published in 1948 by Harper; this is an unabridged and unaltered republication of the original. Excellent consideration of traditional, fine Chinese furniture (excluding lacquer pieces). The book is a true joint effort of four kindred spirits who found themselves in the Peking of 1937 - 1938 on the eve of World War II, but when the Sino-Japanese War had already begun. Basic research was conducted house-to-house, and all photographs were taken then as well. The collaborators are George Kates, the Brooklyn Museum Curator of Oriental Art for the text, his sister Beatrice Kates and friend Caroline Bieber selected the pieces and took measurements, and Hedda Morrison took the photographs.
