Bingham, William (1752-1804): Stock Certificate Signed, Philadelphia, PA Philadelphia and Lancaster Turnpike Road 1795 ; weicher Einband / soft cover; sig.; 1. Ed.
Near fine condition

Partly printed document signed by William Bingham. Bingham was a delegate to the Continental Congress from Pennsylvania (1786-1788); member of Pennsylvania state house of representatives (1790-1791); Speaker of the Pennsylvania State House of Representatives (1791); member of Pennsylvania state senate (1794-95); U.S. Senator from Pennsylvania (1795-1801). This is one of the first stock certificates issued with a vignette (illustration) on the certificate; in this case it is an image of a Conestoga wagon approaching gates and a roadhouse. Official company blind-impressed stamp in left margin of document. Measures 9+1/4" (width) x 7+5/8" (height). Previously folded into thirds, this attractive and clean document is now matted in archival materials. Slightly browned at top edge. Countersigned by the Treasurer William Savitt (name is not clear). Dated May 5, 1795, this is stock number 1025 issued to Henry Sheaff. Just eight years later, on May 19 1803, Meriwether Lewis of Lewis & Clark fame would dine with Henry Sheaff (Philadelphia merchant). This is during the planning stages of the expedition. Signed by Sheaff on the reverse side, along with other persons to whom this was transferred over the years. Voyages & Travel, Americana, Ephemera, The History of the Expedition Under the Commands of Captains Lewis and Clark. An attractive example of this certificate, with an interesting ownership association. Signed First Edition Unbound; First Edition
